Painting plaster mistake

Options
Hi,

I have recently moved house, and decided to get the walls skimmed. Unfortunately I have asked friends and family for advise regarding painting on to the newly skimmed walls and have stupidly taken the wrong advise.

I purchased the cheapest B&Q paint as the first coat, and expensive 'one coat Dulux' for the second coat. I have painted the ceiling and one wall of my bedroom and was shocked when the paint hadn't been absorbed by the plaster.

I have read on this thread that I should of diluted the first coat even though cheep paint, with 20% water. I will definitely do that now, but I am worried about the ceiling and wall I have already painted. Is there anything I can now do to stop any damage to plaster or paint. I am also worried about the next layer of paint.

Please please please advise what to do next, it has been a very stressful experience moving and doing up house on my own. I thought after all the stress things were starting to go well, so couldn't believe it when I realised I'd made this stupid mistake.

Plasterer just said when he left that I could now get on and paint. I thankfully decided to leave it 12 days, but if people think I should leave it longer, please let me know.

Thank you loads for taking the time to read this.

I don't think you have made a mistake when I just had a room replastered we just painted it when it looked dry (about 3 days later) didn't mix the paint with water and it's fine. I stand to be corrected though.

No worries! you bought the right product, b&q will have already watered it down for you. ;)

What do you mean by this? Has the paint not dried? We've recently had some plastering done and it has sucked in several coats of paint - first coat diluted, others full strength.

As I understand it, if you don't use a diluted paint, the new paint won't key in properly.
  • Having used it the B&Q value paint is indeed very watery so I wouldn't worry too much. Perhaps for the first coat it may have been better to let it down a bit but overall you haven't dropped a big one
  • We started out with a cheap paint when our conservatory was built and it was such a state! We ended up buying a tin of the much more expensive stuff, used a roller to apply it and it's fine now.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

Hi, I am not very good at using forums so I hope this has copied your message and my message okay. I purchased the B&Q value paint as brother said it was watered down lots already. When I painted it onto the wall and waited for it to dry i presumed it would soak into the plaster as everyone had mentioned, but it didn't. I am now worried it has gone on like a normal decent paint and not been absorbed so I will have problems when painting the next coat or in the future it may all start peeling off.

Thank you for everyones reply :-) I was wondering if anyone can advise on what to do with the two areas i have already painted.

    Thanks again

watering down the first coat of paint basically stops the plaster absorbing all the moisture from your proper coat (this stops the paint peeling or blistering).

To be honest, if you have put a coat of cheap paint on, and it looks alright, you shouldnt have a problem. If you have noticed any blisters or anywhere where the paint is peeling, remove it and get a bit of diluted pva on there.

I agree, B&Q do water the paint down, on there value stuff anyway. If that's what you used, then that will be fine. Not sure what you mean by saying you thought it would all suck in but it hasn't. If the paint dried and you can touch it without getting a residue on your hand, and it's not bubbled, then its been fine. Don't worry!

My one experience is that diluted pva is actually the cause of emulsion peeling.

I hope you havent used the one coat yet lol, its horrible paint to use straight from the tub, and specially being a novice, and painting over brand new plaster wall, by using the one coat can make them look worse.

Even if you have mistcoated by using diluted paint, or even going over previously painted walls, 'One coat' is far too thick, I know thats the idea as it covers in one coat, but I wouldnt use on flat walls, and I am a professional decorator.

Its far too thick, you cannot get a decent brush stroke with it, and trying to roll it will make the walls look uneven, as the paint is too lumpy.

What I do if the customer has bought this, or 'Crown Solo' is thinned it down, even if I have to do an extra coat, the effect and appearance outweighs that lumpy/ draggy/ brush/ orangepeel look.

BTW, even with cheap paint, (if customer has already bought, as I wouldnt) lol I still thin it down slightly.
Never use PVA on any bits that are blistered or peeled, never use PVA on any bare/new plastered walls no matter what anyone tells you.

By using a mistcoat the actual paint gets into the plaster and seals it ready to take on the rest of coats, by using the dreaded PVA it does not asborb into the plaster, it sits like a film on the plaster, not in the plaster, therefore when you apply paint, specially if its too thick that too is sitting on top of the PVA.
Down the line you want to change colour, so you sand down the walls, and apply your new colour, Oooops, the new paint is lifting the original paint underneat, and you are left with strips and patches of paint coming off onto your roller.
This can also happen on the new plaster if you use PVA.
Plus, always mistcoat new plaster with a Matt paint, only Matt, then if you want to use silk you can paint that as long as you have mistcoated/sealed with the Matt first.
