Fined £270 Even Though I Had Car Insurance - Fighting Since June 2009!

The original cop should have made a simple call to the insurance company and all would have been resolved. I simply won't drive a car until its on MID, its not worth the hassle.0

Not really the police's fault!
So it was my fault then?Weirdlittleman wrote: »Something really doesnt add up. Thinking Troll in all honesty.
Yes. I will go through all this just to troll. Not very amusing tbh.Pew_Pew_Pew_Lasers! wrote: »It should be for our justice system to prove guilt, and not for the public to demonstrate their innocence.
Thank you! Spot on! :beer:The original cop should have made a simple call to the insurance company and all would have been resolved. I simply won't drive a car until its on MID, its not worth the hassle.
He did make a call, but they where closed (or that's how I remember it. And I suggested to make the call, he never offered to make a call, he was pretty determined to tow the car.)
And suggesting I waited till MID updated there systems is pretty... Erm. How do you expect me to do that anyway? Call the police just to check? If my insurer says I'm insured, then that's that me thinks. Hell, I didn't even know what a police MID was up until then.blue_monkey wrote: »And for the future, never, ever send an original without photocopying it first!!
Thanks for the information, I'll try follow it up. Regarding a photocopy... I do have one, but as you said... It's just a photocopy and no current department will accept that as proof, as the original is needed. I'll see if I can get another CoMI sent out by my old insurer, I doubt they will though. The only other thing that I didn't photocopy was the receipt of payment, but I do have a copy of my bank statement to prove payment. Thanks again for the advice.
And thanks for everyone that responded, you've all been great help so far. But I'm still stuck in a pickle not knowning really what to do. I'll be filling out one of those online complaints thingymajigs in a short while, gotta' start somewhere.0 -

Jesus, will you read! I had to wait "well over a week" for my CoMI to come through, which as I mentioned for the 3rd time already, is the only form of proof they would accept.
Understand now?
No, why would anyone let their insurer keep them waiting over a week to get their car out of a police pound?
(And no need for the blasphemy, is there?)0 -
Dunno, but you do seem to have contributed to this, (why did you wait "well over a week" to sort it?) You will have been made aware the costs involved.
Most folk in your circs would have been jumping up and down to have their car back the next day!
Jesus, will you read! I had to wait "well over a week" for my CoMI to come through by mail, as I had just purchased the insurance that morning, which as I mentioned for the 3rd time already, is the only form of proof they would accept.
Understand now?
And what difference would it have made? Would you have still justified me paying the £105 + a few days worth of impound fees anyway? I sure hope not.0 -
I think the point is, the OP was assured that he would be refunded if it was shown that the car had insurance so should not have been towed in the first place. How about letter to the Chief Constable explaining all the events and enclosing a photocopy of both the insurance and the payment and ask him to investigate?:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0

Isn't this the issue - your car was impounded till you were able to prove you were insured. The "fine" was the towing/storage charges, not a fine.
It took you "well over a week" to come up with the certificate, hence the costs escalated. Not really the police's fault!
Do I smell bacon?0 -
Marv02, ignore the trolling pig.
What happens if you go back to the impound? Surely they have a phone number that you would call *if* you wanted to pay. I know you DON'T want to pay, but maybe the impound company would be a better place to start than the police station? I assume the police contract out impound and storage facilities?0 -

You are driving me insane, you know that? I came here for peace of mind, not to be hammered by someone who can't read.
O.K. For the last time, and I'm not sure how else I could put this:
Once upon a time...
1) Mr X calls up insurance company.
2) Mr X pays by debit card.
3) Mr X is assured that his car is now fully insured.
4) Mr X is pulled over 7 hours later.
5) Mr X can't provide insurance "documents" on the road side due to the fact that it was purchased the same morning and would take up to 5 working days for the welcome pack along with the CoMI to come through by mail.
And everyone lived happily ever after. The end.0
