Toilet cistern filling up slowly

My downstairs toilet takes forever to fill after a flush. I'm not sure what type it is but the button sits on the top of the cistern and is a push button.
When filling up, it's like when you put your finger over the end of a hose and let a small amount of water through, it comes out in a small pray.

Replace the ball valveRemember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0

Check that the isolator valve or stopcock feeding the cistern is fully open.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Check inside the cistern, the small plastic pipe hasn't got a kink in has it.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

As above. Could it be limescale on the inlet? Do you live in a hard water area.
FYI I have just replaced the whole inlet & valve with a Fluidmaster Quiet Float Valve from Plumb Center. Very quiet and very quick to fill - much better than the old one!!
Like this (although only £7 at plumb centre)

Get a new float valve. The Fluidmaster is pretty good and quite silent as well. That or a Torbeck valve, which works on a similar principle.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
I'll need to open the cistern and remind myself what it looks like but that link looks familiar. The toilet up stairs uses a syphon filter valve which is different from this and was fairly easy to change (not having much luck with my toilets lately!!).
Is this dificult to replace? Are there any other types of flush mechanisms it could be that look similar to the float valve?0 -
The one I replaced as a traditional ball float on the end of an arm which depresses a button (valve). So you don't specifically need the exact same thing (unless the water enters the side of the cistern not the bottom). Plus the Fluidmaster allows you to adjust the height if you have a tall or short cistern.
To change - isolate water supply to cistern, unscrew water fitting, unscrew locking nut plastic under cistern. Fitting is the reverse. Make sure the replacement comes with a new rubber seal and some PTFE around the thread when reconnecting the water won't do any harm
Instructions should come with the new part.0 -
Most probable cause is dirt inside the ballvalve, simple strip down and clean should suffice.Norn Iron Club member No 3530
