Dumb question I know but....................

Because our BT box is dowstairs and my computer with one phone is upstairs, we have a three-way adapter. At the BT box we have a three way adapter to accommodate two downstairs phones and the upstairs requirements.Everything worked well under e7even. A week ago I connected to talktalk after an initial hiccup (error 680!). I renewed surfing untill the two downstairs phones were used to make a three way chat, whilst I'd left the comp on. The result was that my connection ceased. Rather than go into chapter and verse, TT suggested that the extension cable might not be ADSL capable and I should either consider replacing it. The comp is exactly above the BT socket on the floor above, but cable is required to be directed over several door frames etc. The other alternative was to get a wireless router. Question now is. I've heard of them but don't know how they operate. My knowledge of them is via the Argos bible. Please, in easy laymans terms, try to explain how they are used, what is required, my PC operates on windows '98 SE.

Forget wireless for the moment, how many ADSL filters are you using?

You don't mention if you have ADSL filters on each of your telephone plugs? Sometimes known as micro filters.

Today I connected with NO filter at the BT box but DO have one at the end of the extension cable.Having surfed an hour or so, I added aan ordinary phone to the adapter downstairs and I was able to continue surfing. My next move was to add the upstairs phone to the microfilter at the comp. I am unsure what will happen. Either it will allow me to, or at the first call that is made, I will loose connection. I anticipate you will say there SHOULD be a microfilter at the BT box, (as it was with e7even), but yesterday that didn't work. Anyway, lets see what you say.

See what happens, but yes, there should be a filter at every bt box. As far as I remember, a micro filter seperates frequencies used for the phone from the raw frequencies used by ADSL. So, in theory, as long as the filter is in place before the phone, it should still work.

Which wouldn't actually be doing anything unless a phone was plugged in.

Having surfed an hour or so, I added aan ordinary phone to the adapter downstairs and I was able to continue surfing.

But this phone would not be filtered from the ADSL signal.

Nothing as this phone will be filtered.

Basically you will need to filter the phones connected to your sockets whether extensions or not. I don't see why you have changed the filtering just because you have changed ISP.

Right, I have now plugged in the upstairs phone and here the dial tone. I will now close everything down, wait a minute and endevour to get back on line. If I'm not back in ten mins, you'll know the two phones have prevented it and I'll have to disconnect them. Please stay watching.

You'll probably have to use wep encryption rather than WPA if the 98 pc needs to be wireless, the alternative is to plug the 98 pc into the router with a wired connection if it is near a phone point.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

3.38pm and I'm back. Lord above knows what happened. I introduced the upstairs phone (to filter) endevoured to connect to net................nothing.I introduced a filter to BT box but still nothing. I was about to give up when I took one last chance. Removed the filter from downstairs by the BT box and got on line. Because of the frustration, I'm going to go a bit of surfing then rest till later. I really don't know what course of action to take for a trouble free connect everytime solution. I must goback and re-read your posts. thanks for the moment.

From what you've described of your setup, Islandman, you need 3 filters.

Into your main master socket (downstairs) should have a 3 way adapter, into which you should have:
    • 1 extension leading upstairs which should not be filtered at the downstairs end. The upstairs end should have a filter in with your ADSL modem and your upstairs phone in.
    • 2 extensions; each of these should be filtered, either as it comes out of the 3 way adapter or at the end of the extension where it goes into the phone. If you have one phone situated by the main socket then you will only have 1 extension. In which case the phone by the main socket will be filtered as it comes out of the 3 way adapter.

If you plug a filter directly into the BT master socket downstairs and then plug your upstairs extension cable into this filter, you are preventing the ADSL signal from getting upstairs!

If you have a three way adaptor plugged into the master socket, the cable that is plugged in this that goes upstairs must NOT be filtered, however if you plug your two downstairs phones into this three way adaptor, they must be connected though filters.

I still don't see why changing your ISP has caused this problem.
