Hello
My son (17) passed his test a few weeks back and has also completed the pass plus scheme - now it's that time where he wants to get on the road himself, and rightly so!
So I've had a look around and it's baffling. Looking for a car then working out the insurance is not straight forward - keying in each car into insurance comparison sites... (yes, I've have read the MSE guide). I would put myself on the policy as an additional driver to reduce costs, but makes little difference (I have 30+ yrs of no claims too).
So I was wondering what is a good first time cheapish car for my son? One with 'reasonably' cheap insurance. He is 17 currently, 18 in 3 months - are there much savings when he hits 18? (I presume very little). He would be doing not substantial mileage, and if it means he can't drive at night then that'd be no biggie, either.
Many thanks for any advice.

You will find that most insurance for his age is extremely costly and he won't start to see much of a difference in premiums until either he has built up a no claims bonus history or he reaches the age of 25.
Males between the ages of 17-24 are considered to be among the highest risk categories for car insurance.
For the type of car you need to think basic, 1.0 litre or 1.1, maybe even a 1.2, anything higher than that and you will be increasing the cost substantially with most insurers.
The car should ideally be of low value and limited in desirability, e.g. no sporty models, no body kits or engine modifications.
Adding additional drivers will help a little.
There are now a good few companies offering pay as you drive insurance which is aimed at younger drivers and you would expect these policies to be cheaper in terms of a standard policy, but they are hevily restricted in terms of use of the car within specific times of day etc.0
