G.C.S.E. results - Will cost me a fortune!

DD has done fantastically well and got all A* in her GCSEs.

She said weeks ago that her friends were getting £x for an A*, £y for an A and so on. We can't afford it and to be honest she tries really hard at everything she does purely for the challenge. I did joke that I would give her £50 per A*, but only if she got all A*s...EEEEEK

Congratulations to your daughter, you must be so proud :j

Alot of kids do seem to get money for their results these days. I'm sure others will have some good ideas, but could you buy her a small little keepsake or make her favourite meal for tea tonight and lay the table nice etc.

I dont agree with giving kids money to pass exams ( I never got it )

Id be saying to her, you can give ME £50 per a* as I have raised you to be a very intelligent human being with a sterling work ethic.you dont have to give it to me yet, but you can give it to me in years to come when you get an amazing job which she undoubtebly will with that result! Well done to her!!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Be honest, was it you, or your dd who mentioned the figure of £50.00?
We've all been there, but well done to your daughter and don't listen to all this BS about exams getting easier.
Just make no promises regarding A levels!

What about saying you'll put that much in a bank for her over the next couple of years, to be used towards paying university tuition fees? That way you can save up the amount slowly, AND it doesn't get squandered on treats.

  • Thanks for all your nice comments. DDs away at the moment on a leadership course that she won so I had to collect the results for her. They wanted her to talk on the radio, so I had to do that as well. Just been on the local news - thrilled.

  • I think when I did my GCSEs (getting on for 8 years ago, eek!) I did get £25 for doing well from my parents, but I don't know where this £x per result thing comes from! Most kids do 8-9 gcses now, it's crazy! She's done really well though, congratulations to her!

Why don't you give her a set amount (for all of them not per gcse!) for her to spend online on dvd or beauty products or soemthing and send her in the discount coupons/voucher code section of the forum, then she'll get more for her money, and learn a valuable lesson at the same time! Or maybe she'll want to save it, even better!!!

I wonder if I could get this exam bonus paid retrospectively...
Personally, I think an inner sense of pride and the subsequent self-esteem is more use to a 16 year old than having cash handed to them, but perhaps I'm just tight and a wee bit bitter ;)

Many congrats to Mini Me Myself!

Personally with a DD who is more interested in boys than school work I will probably have to pay her to pass exams or she will be living with us forever :D
