The same friend that bought a PAYG phone with them just got alerted that they carried out a credit check on them.

Now I dont know how mobiles.co.uk works, but a credit check for a PAYG phone.

They also applied for a new credit card and signed up to a monthly sim only with 02. So three credit checks were placed on there Equifax record in one day. One of which was not required.

What right does a company have to carry out a credit check when credit of any form has not been requested ( unless PAYG phones now require a credit check ) ?

Id request they remove this as you feel not required as you are not asking for a credit, if not removed, contact a solicitor.
    Kind Regards

Is it not an address check for paying for the phone by card or registering to top up by card?

Your friend has to give permission in some way or another to have a credit check done. Either by signing for it or by being explained that this will happen.

I had a similar experience in Phones4u. I disputed the search via the Equifax system and it was removed.

However I maintain what I have said on this subject previously in the MSE forums that companies that make errors on credit files and search multiple times and without permission should be instantly fined £500 by the CRA and the value passed to the person who has been wronged.

I am sure this robust approach would reduce the amount of "trigger happy" errors going on.

    .

Its pretty vague if permission is being sought for a PAYG phone ?

But if you visit the site, and place a PAYG phone in the basket, it implys that all contract sale require a credit check ( which of course they do ), but it still makes you fill out the information for a PAYG phone.

Who does she contact within Equifax to have the search removed ?

Check the site, and check the wording re credit checks. If it is clear that checks are only carried out for contract sales, which is usual, then ask them to remove the record from Equifax's records, only the vendor can do this, Equifax merely record the details companies send them.

Having said this, if the vendor doesn't play ball, speak to Equifax, explain situation, give details and take it from there.

Don't let it rest...as one poster remarked, some companies are far too trigger happy.

Its impossible to get hold of Mobiles.co.uk , she's been trying since last week over an overcharge and an incorrect items.

This company are really diffiicult to get hold off. She has already made over 20 attempts since last week and they have yet to reply.

There may now be a 3rd issue. She seems to think she may be charged fro some insurance and gadget support. Once again its very vague if she is signed up to it, but there is no way of knowing until money is taken from her credit card .

If she has been there should be a letter from the Geek Squad and an email from Talk Me Through it - and if so she needs to cancel both straight away. This is all familiar territory with contract phones (the PAYG is a newer development) and there are plenty of threads on all these issues and this dealer on this site!
