NTL the best way to terminate a contract

Hi, all,
I am looking for advice that once my twelve month contract expires with NTL how to go about sucessfully ending it. I fully understand that I have to give 30 days notice, I also understand that I ring customer services and ask for retentions but, I have read countless scores on the internet of users having difficulty in getting NTL to accept the disconnection and some users have even continued to be charged for services they have long since left. My greatest concern is the possibility of being black listed so, naturally I want to make absolutly sure that when I do end my contract that I will not suffer the same fate as others have? I dont even mind paying some legal person, I just wish to make sure that my service is terminated in a proper way and that I dont suddenly find letters or phone calls asking for payments once I have gone. Any advice is really appriciated but, it must be constructive
