Help needed to get diagnosed...

There's a huge chance that I could have ME/CFS. I have a lot of the symptoms so went to the doctors today and after being told off for going in on 'a busy bank holiday' he then spent the rest of the time asking me 'why do you want to be diagnosed' and insinuating that I only wanted to be diagnosed so that I could play on it because 'that's what a lot of people do'.
I only want to be diagnosed so I can know for sure what the matter is with me and then I can get help for it ie ways of managing it.

I don't know what to do!

I think you should see a more sympathetic doctor.

That's a terrible attitude and comments by the Dr, unfortunately it's becoming more the norm these days. Change your Dr if you can.

I had similar problems when I first went to a GP and asked about being diagnosed with ASD:

Why do you want the diagnosis?
Oh, ASD - that's popular at the moment!
Please stop reading medical articles - you'll only believe you've got everything you read!
Well clearly you've diagnosed yourself - would you believe it if you were told you were wrong?

I was lucky in a way....I moved house, and moved GP too!
My new GP did ask why I wanted the diagnosis. I told him:

For my own piece of mind - I want to know why I am like this.
Because it will make it easier for me to get the help I need both financially and to obtain adaptions for my flat.
So that my medical record is as up to date and accurate as possible.
At the moment there is no cure/treatment but in the unlikely event that there is a miracle breakthrough, i'd like the diagnosis on record so I get the new meds ASAP!

My new GP laughed, told me I had clearly thought about this a lot and started the (long!) process of refering my for a diagnosis.
Switching GPs was the best thing that could've happened!

It may be worth reading the complaints information on the NHS website (clicky). GP's are paid a very large salary for what they do, so they have no reason to behave like a bottom exit (if you take my meaning).

If your surgery has more than 1 GP, make a complaint and ask never to see that GP again. If there's only 1 GP at the practice, change GP's and then complain.

We don't pay our NI contributions just so the GP can go play tennis every other afternoon and have holidays in the Bahamas. They need to know that there are consequences to their flippancy over illnesses.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

Well said Mr Grouch. I have had experiences with excellent doctors but also some dire ones - one doctor nearly killed me by giving me an IV drug that stopped my heart - (not a good moment) because he was too cocky and thought he knew it all and wouldnt listen to what we were telling him.....

Many doctors seem to presume that you just invent these symptoms just to gain benefits - i would have been much more pleased if my doctor had come back and said - no, you have nothing wrong, rather than my diagnosis - but they do seem to think they are the only people with brain cells that work...one doctor (patronising g*t) spoke to me like i was 4 in slow single words of no more than 5 letters, i swiftly reminded him that my brain does work and that i too also have a degree.....they seem to think we are all thick !

    Hi lita

Have you had blood tests to rule things out?

ME has similar symptoms to thyroid disease, pernicious anemia, anemia, low vit D etc.

I agree I have Me and other illnesses, the doctors will have to rule out other illnesses before they diagnose Me.
If I was you I would get an appointment with another doctor at your practice.
    Good luck

I put in a complaint about one doctor who treated my son along these lines. My son was about 18 at the time and came out of the surgery in tears. I got an apology in writing from her, and from the head of practice. That was all we were after really - just for them to acknowledge that my son wasn't wasting their time. She had actually written him a sick note and then tore it up, and said she was sick of 'benefit scroungers' (her actual words - my son wasn't even getting any benefits). She's been nice as pie since.
