    Yes, I have tried it.
I did it for 11 weeks a couple of years ago and lost 2.5 stones but the attitude of LL stinks. The whole thing is very anti-food. Each week I had to attend a 2 hour group therapy session doing CBT exercises and watching films about how every food group is bad for you!!!!! The cost was £66 a week, which goes straight to the "counsellor" who is actually a franchisee. Mine had never been on LL and had weighed no more than 9 stone in her life!!!
To answer your question, yes it does work but at what cost to your mental health? I didn't enjoy the sessions and later tried Cambridge diet to shift the last of the weight. I found it much better, more relaxed as its one to one with the counsellor and cheaper, and with more of a view to getting you back to a point where you can start on a sensible eating plan.
The best weight loss plan I have tried is Paul McKenna's "I Can Make You Thin". With the use of the book and CD I have retrained my brain to recognise true hunger and fullness so I now only eat as much as my body needs.
From a money-saving POV this is brilliant as the book/cd only cost about £9 and I now buy less each week in my grocery shop.
Which ever plan you decide is for you...Good Luck x

I believe it's about £70 a week - for this you also get some counselling - although this may vary a lot depending on the skills/empathy of your counsellor. I did Cambridge which is about £40 a week. The packs are all pretty tasty, shakes, soups, porridge and bars - much nicer than the lighterlife ones someone gave me to try, no counselling included in this cost tho. I did lose 8 st in 9 months, and when in the right frame of mind it's fairly easy - no food to weigh out, count calories etc, just open a pack, eat, get on with your day. However, if you have a busy social life and/or have a family to cook for it's fairly alienating. Also for me it was the psychological battle of not eating not physically a problem as I can't say I was ever 'gnaw my arm off' starving.

Its very expensive, its naughty they dont tell you on there.

Have a look at Weight to Go which is what I ended up buying. IF you stick to the meals sent to you and the odd veg and fruit on top then it does indeed work. I lost half a stone in a month with ease and that was with me cheating by not having the three shakes you can have a day and having porridge for breakfast instead and the odd yoghurt/ice cream on top. You get nice soups for lunch and proper food :) for dinner.

Ive just bought a customised pack for another month leaving out the shakes as I have them all still :(

Isn't this the diet where the bride-to-be died of heart failure due to eating an advised 500-ish kcals a day?

Actually, reading some of the websites both for and against LL, it sounds like an AA 12 Step Meeting - they are powerless over food, they must abstain from it at all costs, etc, etc, keep with the program...

Have just read this and have to say that I very much doubt the bride to be died from only having 500 calories, it is more likely to be down to having to drink 5 litres each day.
My friend did this diet and lost lots of weight but it didn't stay off. She was horrified when the cost rose to £150 per week and decided to look around online auction houses for the products. She now does another one which seems to actualy just give a normal diet as your daily amount- can't remember if it's SW or WW but I feel it's SW.

If you really want to lose weight and keep it off, change your lifestyle. don't go on a diet.

One of the Drs at the practice were I work runs the Lighter Life programme - it does seem to work very well and considering it should be £77 a week, its obviously a fantastic deal for those who are offered the chance to go on it.

It might be worth asking if your GP practice does anything similar.

    short term fix

doing a starvation diet like this will just result in your body consuming your muscle and organs as well as your body fat

so when you come off it your metabolic rate will be drastically reduced meaning that you will put weight on very quickly

and worst of all you have not trained yourself what are healthy foods or what are proper portion sizes so if you go back to your old eating habits you will balloon up

and its perfectly feasible to loose heart mass on a starvation diet and over a long enough time or if you have an underlying problem it could kill you

as KAz said change your lifestyle, your overweight for a reason, your overeating and or eating junk food and or not being active enough
