Dishwasher – 1 person household

I am due to move next month and am currently researching appliances. I have never owned a dishwasher and am after some advice. All of the posts I have read suggest that tabletop dishwashers should only be purchased if space is limited.

I will have the space for a full-sized appliance however I will be living alone. I was going to purchase a compact model however I get the impression that they are not as good. Am I mad to be considering a full sized model? I would only run the appliance when it was full, however I imagine that it would take some time for me to fill a full sized model.

So if you were in my shoes what would you buy, compact, slim or full sized?

Thanks

Well, full size dishwashers tend to be cheaper than the slimline ones. Just make sure the one you get has a decent rinse function, that way you can rinse everytime you put items into it and when you go to actually wash the dishes, the food wont be too hard to get off...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I'm a one person household and in my last home I could only get a slimline dishwasher in. I hated it, never really worked well. Where I am now, I have a full size dishwasher, I bought a new one about 2 years ago, it's wonderful. I don't run it everyday but about 3 times a week. All you need to do is make sure you have enough cups, glasses and plates etc so you don't run out in between.

well answer is upto you question becomes what u want 2 spend really. slimline suits me and the wife but we bought bosch but you will always pay more for a slimline and i would suggest going for a better brand out there rather than a cheaper one as alot of them don't dry that well or other issues. with the 2 of us we put on every 2-3 days dependant on amount we use. i would suggest finding the exact model you want then also check the following price comparison sites for price but research is key no point buying rubbish because the price is what you can afford.

use comet to determine model you want first of all but there prices arent always that good in some cases

    Thanks for the replies.

Mwilletts – I was planning to rinse the dishes before they went in, but will take your advice and look for one with a good rinse

moneypenny2k– Thanks for reassuring me that others have done the same

Basil1234 – I can afford a full size model, jut wasn’t sure of the cost or running one. I have already decided on Bosch for all of my appliances and will now narrow down the exact model

Full sized it is, unless of course nickj wants to come round and hand wash my dishes for me!

I would love a dishwasher for just the 2 of us but just have no cupboard space :( I've mulled over getting a tabletop one many times and researched them until I'm blue in the face. Only the really expensive ones (Bosch and AEG) seem worth having, the cheaper ones don't fare well in the comments.

bigbumpagirl was only thinking full size is 12 place settings before is full where a slimline is 9 place settings so thinking you dishes you will need to get a huge amount more of dishes and cutlery and also dirty dishes sitting in there for about 4 days plus maybe. unless you decide maybe fill up 3/4 full then put on.

I have a slimline dishy, and it functions perfectly well. I've owned it for about 12 years, use it every day and only needed a repair once (touch wood). It serves a 4 person family no problem, although sometimes have to wash 2x per day at weekends. By the time I switch it on, I've just about run out of glasses, mugs etc, so you would need to consider owning a good supply for a lone person!

I would never return to a bowl and fairy liquid, thanks, nothing cleans as well as a dishwasher!

The advice to rinse is sound, especially if you don't switch on straight away.

I am single and have a full sized dishwasher. (What a strange ommission when taken out of context?!)

I use mine once a week, it cleans everything properly, I figured no point getting rid of it, hopefully it will last a while (its 6 years old.....).
