Switching Tariff mid Contract with an Expensive Phone
Hi All,
If I entered into a new Contract with a mobile phone company where I got a smartphone for free. Could I change the Tariff a month or so in, to one which was cheaper?
The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of getting a HTC Desire. If I got one for £35 a month it'd be free. However, I'd rather have a cheaper Tariff, but that'd mean paying quite a bit of money for the phone.
So is this a potential way of getting a nice phone on the cheap on a cheap tariff?
Cheers,
Rich

You would be unable to change to a cheaper tariff only one month into a contract.
The network would need to recoup the cost of the subsidised handset which you would have been provided at the commencement of your contract.
Depending on which price plan you are on, you may be able to reduce your tariff from month nine of the contract.0 -
You might be able to move down one tariff after you pass the halfway point in the contract (but some network are now only allowing this in the last month).
As Ann says above, you have to realise that the phone isn't really 'free' its paid for through the monthly costs you agree to. Also when you agree to a contract you're agreeing to to pay £x for x months, they 'may' allow you to drop but they don't have to.0
