TV RIP ater 14 months

Hi all
Bought a LG 42" TV from curry's 14 months ago.
Last week it the picture dimmed and then smoke started coming out through the vents at the back.
I'm aware of the fact that shops have a responsibility under the Sale of Goods Act so I contacted Curry's. They asked for an engineers report, I got this done and it said that it was beyond repair.
The TV cost £630.00 and Currys at first offered me £325.00. I felt this was unreasonable and I spoke to the Team Leader on the phone, he eventually raised this offer to £375.00. I still feel this is unreasonable, especially as I know other people in a similar situation have had new TV's given to them.
I will be contacting Trading Standards tomorrow, but I'd be interested on others opinions, thanks.

And you have had 14 months use out of the old one. It appears to me that if the TV was under full warranty then you should get a new for old, if it wasn't under full warranty then you should be grateful they are willing to give you almost 70% of the price of a new one0 -
Sounds like a fair offer to me too.
Why do you expect full recompense for the last 14 Months use???0 -
You right to a remedy under soga acts last for 6 years neglecting fair ware and tear. Personally I would expect a tv to last 6 years. So that 72 month again the 14 you should be entitled to 73% of the original purchasing price if they wish to remedy though a refund. Just write to them that you either want an exact replacement or £425 your entitled too and a refund for the engineers report, Or you lodge a small claims claims
Do you still have the original receipt?0 -

I think the second offer is fair considering you will only have to add £25 to a brand new one...

Thanks Mankysteve, I do have the receipt and Curry's have a record on their system.
I will ring Trading standards tomorrow and see what they say. I am happy to go the small claims route if necessary.0 -
had a similar problem with my lg plasma tv .Picture went after about 2 years only got 250 quid back off of tesco, tv cost 700 pounds new, even after talking to team leader and sending him an email quoting sales of goods act. wonder
er if i should contact trading standards.0 -

I suggest that you read The Sale of Goods Act ! The retailer's responsibility actually lasts for 6 months, most retailers give 12 months. After that you have the right to claim damages if you can prove certain things.
SoGA DOES NOT specify that a product should last for any specific time.
I think you have been made a very reasonable offer, if you think you can do better, then you will have to get an "engineer" to prove that the TV suffered from an inherent defect or manufacturing defect and then take legal action to support this.
