McAfee Security Centre about to expire?

Thanks for all replies.
Will def try & use McAfee connection which is now working as you said.
MSE didnt want to charge me for removal of Malware it was McAfee, whose system had allowed the *** thing on to the computer in the 1st place, plus they want £40 to renew. So wouldn't touch them again with bargepole.
Picked MSE as it was the 1st one on the Martin's list on the main web site for non-techie's - it said Avira was very good but not too easy to use.
Have also read quite a bit on this forum on other threads about security software and everyone seems to have a different opinion as to which is the best (especialy with regard to pay or not?) so to be honest I found it a bit confusing, epecially when I looked on some of the test & review web sites which tell you what % accuracy each one achieved etc - most of it I didn't understand.
All I want is something simple, which works efficiently & doesnt slow my pc/laptop down?0 -
I switched from McAfee to MSE. I got rid of McAfee through Add/Remove progs. Worked fine and with a restart it was gone.In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0

Not sure why it says Aviras not easy to use!
Anyways, the basics of an av program is to prevent nasties from infecting your computer. Thats it in a nutshell. Any extras arent really needed (Though some might find them useful). Some also come with firewalls (Again, not really needed unless XP is used which has a bit of a dubious firewall). In fact its usually the firewall that lets software down (Aviras is cr*p for example)
In terms of sheer prevention of nasties, Aviras pretty much top of the pile. MSE is very lightweight, but certainly not as good as Avira
My personal suggestion is use the free version of Avira. And no matter WHAT you use, use malwarebytes as a secondary scanner. Avira doesnt have malware scanning though, and neither does it have email scanning (So use malwarebytes periodically for malware, and anything email related your unsure of - put the attachment on the desktop and scan from there)
If you feel thats too much for you then stick with MSE (Or maybe Avast)
Ive never tried it, but the latest incarnation of Norton is supposed to be pretty good these days if you wish to pay
What ALL avs seem to be bad at is infections via webpages. For this I use FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin
Now as youve said, youll get differing views all over the place. But what ive put above is concrete. Aviras top of the league for prevention of viruses, and noscript stops webpage based attacks. Anything else is down to whether you feel its needed or not (personally I feel most of the 'extras' are just BS)
Personally I also use SPYBOT for its immunise feature (And the odd scan every now and then):idea:0 -

What succinct reply - everything in a nutshell. Thanks very much for your reliable advice, will def take it.
Maybe your last post should be put at the begining of the security thread & updated as things change - would def save non-techies like me an awful lot of time & searching.0
