Is she from another country? Is that why she might not have ID here??

If she was from another country she would have either a passport or citizen card or both and they are suitable photographic ID's but would not confirm their name and address. A recent utility bill or letter from a government department such as a Tax Credit Award notice or Child benefit letter would be sufficient to confirm the name and address.

Blackpool_saver --- the OP is the girls mother-in-law and obviously knows what her own son is like since she is referring to him as wayward.

Hi again, maybe, but for the this poster, where she finds herself is real to her.

As regards ID, this was a problem I had in opening my account. Whilst I was on the Voters Register, the only ID I had was my driving licence. No passport (never been out of the country in my life) and all bills, bank statements etc are in my wife's name. EXCEPT the council for some reason had me on the Council Tax bill, no idea how or why.

We had that with our council tax, the council assumed the bill should be in the mans name, I own the house and pay alll the bills as in your relationship with your wife.

I rang the council and they argued that the bill had to go in my husbands name because we are jointly liable for the council tax and thats which is daft because Im jointly liable so why change the name when the forms are all filled in and signed by me alone?

Sexism is alive and well with councils around the country.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Can you not open up a basic account and give her the card just so she has somewhere to change the benefits to until she can get her own?

When my ex left, I had to close our joint account and open my own. I wasn't allowed to receive my benefits via a third party, as lauren_1 suggests - the Job Centre insisted on a separate account in my name.

Birth certificate and marriage certificate can count towards ID, but something with current address on would probably be needed as well.

She does NOT have to have a bank account to have benefits paid to her despite what the DWP says. They must pay her by giro even though they don't like doing so. If she wants to open a Post Office account she must get a letter of invitation from the Jobcentre. She can do this tomorrow when she makes a claim for IS for herself. As has been mentioned before she needs to make sure the Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits are in her name.

If he was claiming for them both in effect they have had her ID but she should also have her name on any council tax bill (she should because they are joint and severally liable whilst living in the property).
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!

Thankyou to all of you for your help, sorry I hadn't been on over the last couple of days, I've been helping her to get sorted, she informed child tax credits, child benefit and stopped the payments going to his account. she has claimed income support and has applied for rehousing. He had put his mark on everything, she had been too frightened of him to say anything. She and the children are safe and getting sorted now. Her confidence has been knocked but we'll get her back. So once again a huge THANKYOU for your help. :j
