Hi there, contact the CAB (Citizens' Advice Bureau) for help with Benefits. She will need to see a specialist Benefits Advisor.

Also the CSA (Child Support Agency) for maintenance for the children.

I'm sure DWP can help with setting up bank accounts, or at least giving information on them. (if she's planning on claiming benefits, such as income support?)

OMG, how can she have not have a bank account? In this day and age, I thought everyone has a bank account.

Every woman should have a slush fund for this type of thing if you ask me :rotfl:

I bet she's right cheesed off too.

Hi, yes most people would believe that to not have a bank account today is very strange.

However, you would be totally surprised how many don't for one reason or another!
This may be choice or circumstance.

In my particular case, my wife has had a sole current and savings account with the Halifax for close on 30 years. I was never and am still not a signatory to that account despite over the years all of my income was paid into it. It is only in the past 18 months that I have had my own current account primarily to have my benefits paid into it. All of my other income - pensions etc are still paid into her account.
And incidentally I have never had a credit card in my life, whilst my wife has two which she settles every month.
Additionally, our home is owned by her only, and my name does not appear on the title deeds! It is security for her and the family - the least that I could provide for them all.

There was no other reason for this setup other than that she looks after the family finances as a stay at home mother and has never worked since the children were born in 1981. I have never gone without and always have peace of mind that all of the bills are paid. My responsibilty in the family was to go to work and earn the income.

Maybe a little old fashioned but to be honest, I have never had the need to have money other than enough for lunch and incidentals.
My twin daughters have now followed our footsteps with their husbands' - they both do not work but have families to bring up, both husbands are more than willing to let them look after the family financial affairs - one less bit of stress!!!

Hi again, maybe, but for the this poster, where she finds herself is real to her.

As regards ID, this was a problem I had in opening my account. Whilst I was on the Voters Register, the only ID I had was my driving licence. No passport (never been out of the country in my life) and all bills, bank statements etc are in my wife's name. EXCEPT the council for some reason had me on the Council Tax bill, no idea how or why.

If she has no bank account, she might want to call Child Benefits and make sure that the child benefit money, and also tax credits if the family received them, is not deposited into your son's account, as this is money that will come in very useful to her in providing for the children. That is assuming, that as she has no bank account, that the monies are being paid into his account.

I don't have any "proper" ID either, no passport and I don't drive so don't have a driving licence either. I opened a Halifax basic account and they accepted a letter from Child Benefit with my name & address on and a BT phone bill as my ID.

If she explains everything to the benefits people they maybe able to arrange payments by giro until she can open a bank account.

If she has a relative she trusts she may be able to get benefits paid into their bank account until she can open her own.

Here's details about the Halifax basic account including types of ID they will accept:
