In addition, very low mileage is very bad for your car.

I can see sales of new cars plumetting as a result of this ground breaking news.

It's only partly !!!!!!!! - low mileage done in very low frequency, high distance journeys is fine. Low mileage done in rounds of 1-9/10 mile trips is terrible for your car....though i suspect you know this

Really? The cambelt very rarely simply just snaps for no reason. Cars like VW's with cambelt changes now recommended at 4 years are simply badly designed e.g. plastic tensioners and plastic impellers on the waterpump that just disintegrate - cost reduced to the extreme and now the customers have to pay. I have two cars 13 years old with the original cambelts fitted - no sign of any deterioration or wear, so any car that need a new cambelt after only 4 years is simply pathetic bad design!

A mileage of 5-6K per year is not very low mileage and many people with more than one vehicle to drive do this mileage annually with absolutely no problems, so yes it is bo!!ocks.

  • The dilemma on for the owner of the car. Do you spend X amount on a new belt as per manufacturer recommended mileage/age or do you take the gamble and keep going if there is no problem.

Personally, I think it depends on the value of the car compared to what it would cost to replace the belt.

For the first time since I’ve been driving (20+ years) I have decided to pay and get the Cam belt changed. On a Vauxhall 1.9D which has done just over 125K.

The recommended change was 90k, It just goes to show that they do run for more than the recommended. I’m pretty car savvy with cars and didn’t mind taking the gamble. J
    :jTo be Young AGAIN!!!!...what a wonderfull thought!!!!!

make sure that included tensoners and water pump (if driven by the belt) a worn water pump can throw a belt and the vibrations from a worn pump bearing can be transmeted to other components run bt the belt.

replacement intervals can be found in your hand book. I would not worry about weather climet etc as this is all factored in with the manufactura recomedations

Way to drag a 6 year old thread up - they'll be due another by now!
  • My 2.0 mondeo is advised cambelt change at 100k. Checking it's history the belt was last changed by main dealer at 110K so somebody was feeling confident.
I thought there was a difference regarding damage depending on whether you have an 8 valve or 16 valve engine?
