Using VLC to convert to MPEG 1 - get an error evry time

The catch is, there's no Sony Bravia MPEG-2 option in WinFF. The nearest in WinFF is MPEG-4. I did try MPEG2 using VLC but could not get the right 'recipe' of settings to make it recognisable by the Bravia, probably due to some wrong encoder setting somewhere - too much to choose from.
I must say, for a 2009/2010 TV, the Bravia is a bit backwards in only appearing to accept MPEG-1 on the usb.
That's why I suggested MediaCoder...0 -

Actually I did have a go with Mediacoder and MPEG-2 with again a similar result - file can be seen in the usb folder but would not play. Plus, there are various audio options and it is not obvious what to choose when transcoding. I'll have one last try with Mediacoder, choosing FFmpeg/container MPEG2 for the audio, just to see if my Bravia has any chance of playing MPEG-2 in the future - MPEG-1 quality was a bit iffy to be sure (but OK for catch-up purposes).0

Which model? With some, you have to use certain containers.0

I saw the bit about "-vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -s 1280x720" being a working setting but its not obvious how this is done with Mediacoder.
My 2nd Mediacoder test conversion just completed: I get 2 files, the audio is on a separate MP3 file! And trying to play the mpg file, on the Bravia I get "Playback not Available" message when trying to start it on the TV. WinDVD will at least play the video on a computer but MS Media Player not.
No big deal, for catch up purposes WinFF & MPEG-1 will have to do.

OK buglawton
If you're going to stay with mpeg-1 and WinFF for now.
When using the Bravia mpeg-1 presets with WinFF the default video bitrate is 640Kb/s.
If you want to improve the quality of the mpeg-1 file you can increase the bitrate to 1000Kb/s, 1500Kb/s or whatever.
If you do this you will also get an increase in file size and also it will take longer to do the conversion.
It's a trade-off.
To change the bitrate with WinFF click on the 'Options' button.
This will reveal an extra panel at the bottom.
Then, in the 'Video Bitrate' window, type 1000 or 1500 or whatever you want.

OK, converted again as a test with 1280 bitrate and 1920 x 1080 video size to see if it fills the screen fully too. Will try out the result tomorrow & report back if any good!0

Finally had a chance to play it back. Now the screen is fully filled and the quality is just about the same as SD TV, so these are my future settings. File size is about 50% bigger than the original file. Thanks again bat999.0
