I am trying to use VLC via it's gui convert an .mkv file that plays OK on a computer to Mpeg-1, so I cam play it on a usb stoick on a Bravia telly.

In the VLC gui there is no MPEG-1 setup to I added one with everyting set to MPEG-1, audio to MPEG and 24 fps. But I always get the error "could not open encoder". Converting to MPEG-2 seems to work but won't play on Media Player or the telly.

Any suggestions?

    Hi
I don't know how to do this conversion with VLC.
But if you have ever used WinFF there are some presets for Bravia mpeg-1.

Why would anybody watch a MPEG-1 on a big screen. The quality of a MPEG-1 is very poor (352 x 288). You should rather keep the .mkv and connect a laptop to your TV. I assume you didn't spend hundreds of pounds on a (high quality?) TV to watch low quality movies ;)

Use MediaCoder. But I suggest that you use MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1.
MPEG-1 will be of a very low quality. I'm reasonably sure that it will play MPEG-2 regardless of what is says in the manual.

Using mp1 or mpg2 may not make a difference if the original .mkv file is of a poor enough quality.

.mkv is usually used as a container for HD video.

well, bat999 has cracked it for me! WinFF has an extremely simple option called "Sony Bravia Mpeg-1", chose my input file and clicked GO and off it went and created a file playable on the USB socket of the telly.

For anyone else interested, the result is compressed to half the size of file (so making a 1.1 GB file fit on a CD-ROM, which can be handy if that's your only option) and the result is low res and somewhat pixelated when seen on a big screen plus has narrow black stripes framing the pic to left & right. But as I just wanted watch a documentary to completion (on a proper TV with the missus), this was great for the purpose.

Try MPEG-2. If it works at least you'll have a better quality option in the future.

The catch is, there's no Sony Bravia MPEG-2 option in WinFF. The nearest in WinFF is MPEG-4. I did try MPEG2 using VLC but could not get the right 'recipe' of settings to make it recognisable by the Bravia, probably due to some wrong encoder setting somewhere - too much to choose from.

I must say, for a 2009/2010 TV, the Bravia is a bit backwards in only appearing to accept MPEG-1 on the usb.
