It is more likely that the reflex foam under the memory foam has worn out, rather than the memory foam.
Its spring based under the memory foam .
Is their a reflex pad under the memory foam normally .
I do seem better if i slip a small foam pad under my upper back below the pillow . Which sounds to me as i am sinking in to far on the mattress .
Any advantage /disadvantage Tim or anybody that has used one with latex over memory foam with pocket springs or better just plain pocket springs .

all the memory foam mattrsses like the tempa are advertised as being designed for the space shuttle, how a mattress designed for use in weightless conditions could be of any benefit on earth where there is gravity is beyond my comprehension, also the word "orthapedic" in the retail world is nothing more than a sales gimmick designed to get you to part with your cash, i have tried all sorts of mattresses and none of them help me sleep any better0

I am trying to find a mattress that will aid my lower back pains .
Current mattress is one of the very early memory foam topped versions .
Sleeping is difficult on this as for the last six months i have pain from base of spine into the legs shortly after i lie down .
I have lower back disc problems for twenty plus years . In desperation i tried turning the mattress and sleeping on the non usable side .
This has resulted in a better sleep until i wake up in the morning with back muscles very tight and crippled most of the day .
Previous mattress tried over the years have been
Firm dont know what sort > Full Foam as sold by IKEA many years ago > Two week trial recently of two other mattress . One memory foam with foam base and a standard Staples mattress .
No mattress has really aided my spine in the last twenty years .
Have been looking at Memory Foam 2inch double sided with pocket springs or a Latex 2 inch doubled sided with pocket springs .
To go on a firm divan base .
gratefull for any pointers as to mattress suitable for lower back pain .
I was pounced upon in Dreams then visited a smaller beds showroom where the lady was helpfull but gradual pushed me up the range to £800 + mattress . I then did a bit of research and have spent hours reading various posts so i am a bit more clued up than i was at the start of my search for some comfort .
Thanks for any reply .

I think the variety of posts on this page has summed up the fact that what one person considers the "perfect" mattress for their back is a medieval torture device for someone else.
Mattresses are like keyboards and monitors. And Hi-fis. And, well, lots of things. It's your opinion that matters, not how "good" or "well reviewed" something is. You may find that the best mattress for you is two inches of foam rubber strapped to the back of a door.
My very general advice would be to try to find somewhere that will let you use a mattress on a trial basis - maybe a 7 days or 14 day trial - or at least has a no quibble return policy on the mattress. It might involve sleeping on a mattress that's got plastic on for a while - but you have to find one what works for *you* - not for someone else!
For what it's worth I have lower back pain because I'm fat (though getting thinner, thank you weightwatchers) and I found the best mattress for me was a dreams £600 (though we got it for 2/3 of that price) pocket sprung only mattress was best for me.
Also it is firm enough that when I turn over in bed I don't fire the wife out of it, which is a bonus. :rotfl:0 -

When you said that it was a very early type memory foam topped mattress, I assumed that it was reflex foam with memory foam, as that's how they were all constructed to start with.
Do you have any more information about your mattress?I do seem better if i slip a small foam pad under my upper back below the pillow . Which sounds to me as i am sinking in to far on the mattress .

Both memory foam and latex foam are designed to give you even support without causing pressure points.
You can still get pressure points with pocket springs on their own.
The downside is that if you have an area in the small of your back that is very sensitive to any pressure, then any type of mattress that contours to your body will be in contact with that area.0 -

I presume you are having a laugh???????
Memory foam was developed by NASA for use in the seats in the Apollo missions. They used it because of it's ability to mould to the crews body so that there were no pressure points that could result in serious injury due to the high G-forces caused during take off and landing (not in weightless conditions). Even a wooden chair would feel comfortable in outer space, as there would be no pressure points to to the crew being weightless.
The word "orthopaedic" simply means a mattress that gives good support for your back. Many people think that this just applies to firm mattresses. However it can apply to most pocket sprung or memory foam mattresses. It would only apply to firmer open coil mattresses though.0 -

That's very very true :T.
We are all different, and like different feels and firmnesses from our mattress. This is why the Sleep to Live system at Bensons is just a complete gimmick. The computer doesn't take into account what we like......it tells us.My very general advice would be to try to find somewhere that will let you use a mattress on a trial basis - maybe a 7 days or 14 day trial - or at least has a no quibble return policy on the mattress. Absolutely..... Although don't sleep on the plastic, so make sure you can unpack it. Sleeping on the plastic could give a very hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable feel to what otherwise could be a very good mattress.
You need to check the return policies very carefully, as many of them just comply with distance selling regs, and don't allow you to unpack and sleep on the mattress. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that Dreams comfort guarantee only applies if you use a base supplied by them. And they only replace, and don't refund. For what it's worth I have lower back pain because I'm fat (though getting thinner, thank you weightwatchers) and I found the best mattress for me was a dreams £600 (though we got it for 2/3 of that price) pocket sprung only mattress was best for me.
Personally I'd stay away from Dreams, as most of their products have been renamed, making their price promise worthless. This means that they can put down what they want as the RRP, and are actually very expensive (even at their sale prices). Also it is firm enough that when I turn over in bed I don't fire the wife out of it, which is a bonus. :rotfl:
That's more likely to be because it is pocket sprung. With pocket sprung mattresses, all the springs work independently. So your partner shouldn't feel your movements.0 -
I can wholeheartedly recommend this pocket sprung, memory foam topped mattress: http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&langId=-1&q=MEMORY+1400&pp=20&r_001=1|Bed+size|Kingsize|1
Most comfortable mattress I've ever had. I put in on my divan and initially it was too soft. I got some chipboard cut to put in between the mattress and the divan, thus cancelling out the softness of the divan, and now its proper comfy and firm. The memory foam isn't particularly deep, but I love it. The voucher code "HOMEDISC" should give you £50 off too.0 -

I know it is too late for you. But for anyone else who is considering buying one, I would do a search on the MSE threads for Rest Assured, and the rest of the Silentnight group.0 -
