Great place for a holiday, we were there a few weeks back. Sorry, but no direct flights that I'm aware of. Next best option is LHR-LAX direct, if you are based in the south (but then you would need to drive down to SD). If you are in the north, it will be indirect I'm afraid.

Can't stress how much we enjoyed it there, totally fell in love with the place.

Here is what people think are the best things to do in San Diego:

My opinion is that if you are in the area it is worth a visit for maybe 3 days, but i certainly wouldn't go all the way from the UK to there. I would head for Vegas over SD any day of the week.

3 days is no way enough to see the best of SD. We had 5 nights there and had to miss out on quite a few things.

We happen to really like Vegas as well but it's like comparing apples and oranges - just depends on personal preferences. If someone really pinned me down, I'd take a fortnight in SD before a fortnight in Vegas, but that's just my opinion. The best idea is to go to both, that solves the problem !

BA did do direct flights but they stopped a few years ago. It is a great place but the jet lag at 8 hours time difference would stop you enjoying a trip.

The beauty of Vegas though is that it is centrally located. Lake Tahoe, LA, Death Valley, SFO/Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Utah all within easy reach.

That's actually a great point about Vegas and one that is often overlooked. It's not just a great place itself, but the surrounding area (including places within 30-40 mins drive) has so much to offer. We tend to have a week in Vegas then another week or so elsewhere, just to see new places. This time it was San Diego and we'll definitely go back there.

Going back to the OP's original question, I probably would not travel all that way just for 5 days - that has nothing to do with SD though, I just would not go to the West Coast of USA for 5 days. It took us (from getting up in the morning) 24 hours to get to our hotel, with a connection in PHL. The only way I would consider it would be flying business class, which we never do.

It isn't long enough because the Jet Lag will stop you having energy to do things, you'll be shattered at 3pm local time and want to go to bed.

We went to San Diego for 2 weeks over the Easter school holidays (extended by 8 days due to the volcano) to visit my sister. I wouldn't consider going to west coast USA for less than 2 weeks firstly because of the jetlag and also there is so much to see!
We went to Vegas for a week and the rest of the time we were reliant on my sister to taxi us around and show us around. You definitely need the use of a car as things are so far apart.
In the week where we shouldn't have been there we ended up walking to the nearest shopping mall in the scorching heat because we had no car and my sister was back at working.

There is so much to see on the west coast... the giant redwood trees in north CA, San Francisco (I'd choose to go there rather than San Diego), Los Angeles including the theme parks - even if you don't have kids with you, all the beaches and of course Las Vegas!

    Good luck with it all.
