We've been to SD for a week and also LA for 1 week with a 10 year old.

Loved SD, would love to live there, some of the things we did were.

Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Hourbour Cruise, Legoland (about 40 min drive), Balboa park, lovely place, corondo hotel.

For food we found a great place called the corvet dinner, you will need reservations, really fun place, and also Sammy's a pizza chain had nice food.

Shopping is good too. Best supermarket is called Vons, and get a card from customer service and you save money on your shopping.

Google Go san Diego card and this is what we used for all the places we stayed. Our hotel was Humphries Half Moon Inn, they have summer pop concerts on too, which we enjoyed.

Yep BA use to do the BA288/289 which went phx then san diego and also a non stop, If you can get a few extra days I would fly into Vegas have a couple of days there then drive, but watch that heat in the summer I rented a convertible and by the time i reached SD I was called red top
If you can't do the vegas thing you should try Barona if you like a casino is as good as most in vegas but has a very good blackjack game
and a hotel you can stay in, There is good horse riding in those parts as well
so enjoy
