Sorry I may have confused you. I have been looking for tyres for my wifes car. Toyota Corolla - Michelins.

My wariness about Kwik Fit came from my daughters experience today when they "advised" new tyres as part of the MOT for her Corsa(details above in earlier post). Why do you think the Corsa shouldn't need new tyres? It's done 56k and is on it's second set. My problem, apart from the possibly uneccessary MOT replacements, is that they reckon that there is only 1.6mm of tread left on the Corsa whereas I think there is about 4mm. When I queried this they said that tyre tread should be checked with no load on the tyre

In that case did they take the tyres OFF of the car to check the tread? What a load of c**p.

    Typical ThikFit

No they told me that the care has to be off the ground to check tread wear. I didn't argue as I realised it was pointless. If a policeman checks your tread does he jack up the car before making the check?

They are definately very cheap if you pre-order off the internet (shows how much of a rip-off they are if you drive in without pre-ordering). They were similarly the cheapest for my OH's C-max 12 months ago, but I just phoned round a few local tyre fitters and got one to price match - took a few phone calls but worked out well in the end. However, have just replaced 2 tyres on the C-max and Blackcircles were cheaper, I guess it depends on the tyre / timing.

The nitrogen thing is such a joke. The air is 78% nitrogen anyway, and you cant top them up with nitrogen yourself can you can you?

They could argue that they are checking for damage around the whole tyre, but unless your tyres have got flatspots then the tread depth should be the same all the way around.
You might get the inside or outside edge wearing out more quickly but if you drew line from that point all the way around the circumfrance back to the same point then I can't see why it would have more tread in one place than another.

Oh to be a trading standards officer for a week.
