Has anyone cruised around Asia/Thailand areas?

Talking about booking another cruise and really fancy Thailand or Hong Kong type areas..somehere like that anyway. We have been with P&O twice now on cruises to the Med and last one was caribbean and loved both.
Finding it hard to find many lines that do these areas or the ones that do are for very long periods (we would want 15 days max).

Any suggestions on whether cruising is a good idea?

Thanks

we went Jan/Feb - absolutely fantastic

started in Singapore - Bangkok - Ho Chi Minh City - De Nang (we went to HoiAn) - Halong Bay and ended up in Hong Kong

We went on the Azamara Quest and what appealed was the length of the stops as most were 2 days so you got to see the nightlife too

Ship is small and although American line with the majority of passengers from that part (Vietnam babies!) the main crew were from the UK - Captain was from the Isle of Man and no 2 was from Guildford

Would go back in a mo..it was a 14 night, we booked our flights independantly and tagged on a couple of nights in hotels in Singapore and Hong Kong ourselves but think you can do this through Azamara

When we were looking (this trip was originally inspired by Top Gear in Vietnam!) the choice was Azamara or Costa, I used Cruise Critic and made the correct choice I think...

Last year we did a Bangkok to Beijing Cruise on Diamond Princess which we thoroughly enjoyed, sample itinerary below. The cruise was 16 days but we opted to say on in Beijing for a further three days at the end.

may rule Azamara out then as there were def no kids on our ship (not that they don't allow them just do not encourage/arrange anything for them) plus they do Dec - April in that region only....looks like Princess are similar

on doing a quick search I cannot see any cruises in that region for October - might be the weather

Princess go in October (see below) but maybe the weather is not so good then. We went in March when weather was very good.

I was one of those that 'do not do cruises' but after some persuasion from MRs P, I compromised on a 5 night cruise from Singapore In January earlier this year.

We were going to be in the region for three weeks so I planned the trip to incorporate the cruise as a sort of 'taster'.

I purchased the cruise online directly from Royal Caribbean and I was quite happy with the price, however, the price came down by about £200.00 a couple of weeks before departure and I was very surprised that RC honoured the price drop and refunded my credit card accordingly.

Ports of call were Phuket, Langkawi, Port Kelang (Kuala Lumpur) and returning to Singapore.

Although the ship (Legend of the Seas) is one of the smaller cruise liners in RC fleet, it was sufficient and there was enough to occupy us for the limited time spent onboard.

I never thought I would be someone who would enjoy a cruise, but I have to state that I will definately do it again - without a doubt.

As someone mentioned earlier, Costa cruises do a similar itinerary however, the ship which was in port the same time as us was a converted container ship (Costa Allegra).

I am sure the facilities and services would be fine, but it was dwarfed by the Legend and it looked a bit dated to be honest and I half expected Hercule Poirot to venture onto the deck. of course they may now use a different ship for their Asian itinery.

Star Cruises who are based in Hong Kong also have cruises around the region.

Go for it - I am sure you won't be disappointed.

We did a cruise out of Singapore to Malaysia and Thailand. The ship was Superstar Gemini.
The only thing I didn't like and was surprised about was the fact 99% of the passengers were Australian.
I was told it would be a very mixed cruise but it wasn't so everything was catering for the aussies.

As an add on to my previous post referring to the Royal Caribbean cruise, this was generally geared towards the Asian clientel. For me that was a positive as there was plenty of Asian food available, however, there was also a varied choice for those who preferred western fare.

There were quite a few Aussies aboard the Legend 'enjoying themselves' and certainly the Antipodean couple next to our state room were certainly 'having fun' every night and indeed most afternoons - and mornings - if you know what I mean!

I actually thought a murder was being committed one night due to the screaming:eek:!

Myxomatosis may have wiped out many of the rabbits in OZ some years ago, but I suspect the middle aged Ozzies next to us must have been immune!
