Another recommendation to have a look at ukcampsite.co.uk for advice on tents and campsites.
Things to consider
1) How long are you planning to camp for ? Just a weekend then you want a smaller tent thats quick & easy to erect and take down. But if you're planning a weeks holiday then you may want slightly bigger to cope with more things.
2) How many of you are there ? The berth sizes in a tent tend to be very small. Our tent has two compartments that should take three in each. They're fine with two in each but you would need to be very friendly & small to put three in them. So if there are two of you think about 3 - 4 berth tent. Four of you think about a 5 - 6 berth tent.
3) Do remember that you do need somewhere to store your bits & pieces.
4) If possible try to get along to a tent display or two to see them in the flesh. But if you find a tent you like check the internet to find out if you can get it cheaper on line. Some of the big retailers are also registered with Quidco.
5) Buy a reputable make, there are lots of things that look like tents but won't stand any wind or rain and are a false economy. Be careful with ebay there are bargains to be had but also alot of rubbish.
6) The Hydrostatic Head HH will tell you how waterproof a tent is. The recommendation in Britain is 2000 HH or 1500 at a push. The good makes like Outwell or Vango are 3000 - 5000 HH

ive answered some of your questions,
i was going to get a tent for 2 or 3 and not for any more as other people have they're own, ref #1 it depends how the event would go in terms of a success or not, i cant see it not being good and if its good then im likely to use it again and again eg bank holiday weekends and the summer etc. The makes ive come across that are good are vango, gelert0 -
I think ive decided that i like the look of the vango tents and torn between the vango beta 350, the vango beta 450 or the vango omega 3500
