When I was working for an Local Authority I came across 2 CTax accounts where the Direct Debits had been set up incorrectly.

The officer who set them up had set them for 2026 instead of 2006 and nothing had been picked up although subsequent years had been set correctly and were paid by DD.

I wrote to both accounts and alerted them to the error and asked them to make contact. One account was able to pay the debt over 12 months and the other one offered £20 per month which was accepted as it was LA error (although it as going to take years to pay back).

I suggest you ring or go down in person to sort this out. I don't think for one minute they really expect this within 7 days. If you have the bills which mention DD being taken then take these with you. I think they will be quite generous with allowing you to pay this back.
If they don't give you any leeway then you need a manager to speak to, failing that you could threaten to go the Chief Executive!!

When you say we hadn't heard from the council, do you mean apart from the annual bills stating 'This is for information only, no further action required, you are paying by direct debit'. I'm astounded that someone with so many posts and who has been 'thanked' by so many people would honestly think we knew all along and thought we could get away with it - please tell me you're joking.
I am not joking SURELY you noticed that no payments were going out of your account.
If you say no then I don't believe you.

I have read all of the thread.

And your view is still that we knew all along, and were trying to 'get out of' paying 4 years council tax....after which we posted on an internet forum asking for advice. Please. Cancel your Daily Mail subscription, put down the keyboard and go outside and get some fresh air. Seriously.

    jeffdjeff,

    You need to chill.

It will make no difference to you if "jonesMUFCforever" believes you or not.

Let it go, and don't let the fact that he or anyone else does not believe you cause you so much grief.

For what its worth, I believe you, but don't let that bother you either.

    My advice is,

You will have to pay this to them, but if it were me, I would go and see them on Tuesday and ask why it was not taken by direct debit. Suggest a repayment plan to them that you can afford.

If people come on here now and say they don't believe you,
then so what. That changes nothing.

Go and sort it out and tell us what happens after your meeting with them and don't get stressed if some still don't believe you.

    Andy.

ok thanks, I do recognise that you're right. I haven't posted on here before and had hoped it would be populated with open-minded financially knowledgeable people willing to give a bit of advice, and to be fair a lot of people have. What's been a surprise is the simplistic/judgemental attitude of some and the inability to even entertain this as a genuine oversight.

It really doesn't matter whether people on here believe you or not. They've in the main given you good advice even if it's been laced with incredulity and even mild abuse.

What matters is whether the Council believe you. You might have difficulty convincing them. You won't get anywhere if you don't try.

Don't get hung up over it, let us know how you get on. Feel free to PM me if you like. :)
    Best Regards
