Council Tax Direct Debit not taken - a big bill this morning

Regarding the 'who is at fault' here, if you received annuals bills stating 'This is for information purposes only'... 'As you currently pay your bill by direct debit no further action is required' and then received a large bill out of the blue asking for full payment within 7 days, would you deem yourself to be solely at fault?
Maybe not at fault but I would have noticed that my bank account had a balance £5400 (4 years CT) greater than I expected.0 -

OP thought that the payments were being made by DD - they were not so the money must still be in OP's bank account waiting for him to issue a cheque to the council on Tuesday morning?
There's no fuss, it was a request for advice really, is it fair to pay it in instalments or can the council enforce payment within 7 days. A simple yes/no/don't know will do.0 -

Do you have access to all 13 accounts or does your partner/wife etc have their own account too?0 -
if you regulary check your account that the money was meant to be taken from then surely you would notice a little extra in the bank,
Unfortunately not, on seeing the annual bills indicating it was all set up I had assumed it was coming out of my wife's account (not the joint account). And I'll put my hands up to admitting not checking this!:)0 -
You weren't after 'some advice' you were hoping somebody would be able to tell you you didn't have to pay it.....come on be honest. No matter how many accounts you were juggling you must've noticed you had extra money each month.
Just think of the interest you've earned on the money.0 -
