    Your local authority will have a fund called DHP (Discretionary Housing Payments). The circumstances you describe would make this worth applying for. It is usually only available for short term issues, but may get you through to the break clause when you can move into a more affordable property without the burdon of rent arrears and all that this would entail. The people who deal with LHA should be able to assist you in applying for DHP.
  • Am I right in thinking that your partners son is living with his Nan, and not working? I'm presuming he is over 18?

    Move him in, he can claim Jobseekers Allowance at about £50 a week, take £20 a week off him for keep + a bit towards food.

    Otherwise, try posting an SOA on here.

    Or, contact your landlord. Explain the situation. If you have always paid your rent on time and looked after the property, they may accept a lower rent in order to keep a tenant in the property.

    trust me ive trimmed, i will be leaving myself very little . is that something i can take to the council and show them?

    This may well be true but it's an exercise worth doing as sometimes it's hard to see the woods from the trees when you are living a situation.

    Until we know how much you've got, what you're spending, it's difficult to really know what to suggest as we're poking about in the dark with a short stick.

    I am surprised you can't find £20/week as there are two adults and one child at your house and you're working, so I have no idea how much the income etc is, but there must be some easy squeeze to be had in there.

    Fraid so. It's a minimal deduction, but would make a sizeable dent in any contribution the non-dep made as a contribution is (rightly) expected.

    Always worth a chat with the landlord as, for a few quid, he may prove reluctant to get rid of a good, long term tenant and go to the expense of finding a replacement.

    i currently already work. so will not be able to increase my income,unless i can earn more than 500pw to get over the tax credit line.<no not possible for me>if i downsize now i will be breaking my contract,<pause break is not untill september and i have to give 2 months notice.i have no guarentor. or reference. and obviously i want the practical view not the personal. i just had to explain everything to save me from being beaten around the head with my own post

    Nobody is attacking you, we are trying to help! It is just a bit frustrating that you are not willing to explore any of the suggestions given.

    As I already said, the proceeds of matched betting and competition wins are not taxable and may not reduce your tax credits as they are not (usually) classed as income. If your OH is not working then clearly he has time to spend on such matters - this will mean your broadband will more than pay for itself. If you go onto the Gambling Loopholes board you will you can make thousands of pounds, this is not a tenner here and there. Even tho your OH gave up his job he *may* be able to claim JSA if he is able to give a good reason for quitting and/ or it is a few months ago.

    You do not usually have to serve two months notice to quit, the law says one month from the tenant and two months from the landlord. You may be able to break your contract with the landlord early if you explain the situation in writing. I am sure he would rather release you early and take on a tenant who can afford the full rent, than have to chase you for arrears. It is usual for the outgoing tenant to pay the rent up to the date a new tenant moves in, so time is of the essence here.
