orange representative question for you
Am quite sure av seen posts or answera on here by an orange rep,and i was wandering if they can advise me on an iphone i bought from ebay, which i discussed before but still need more input. The thing is bought an iphone on ebay, seller advised me he could no longer pay his contract so was selling it. So i phoned up orange and registerd to use it on pay as you go and when i asked to unlock having explained how i had obtained the phone the adviser told me had to wait for 3 months from date i registerd it to unlock it however another adviser told me different and that i would not be able to unlock it if the origional owner owes orAnge so am confused now any help please.

Orange policy may differ from law, but you do have to wait the 3 months as per O T&C but Orange cannot bar the handset unless its lost or stolen regardless of the ex-owners payment history or not. The ex owner was legally entiltled to sell on any mobile given with a contract, the network does not have any claim to ownwership of the mobile phone under UK law, only the contract obligation & its payment/s.
But Orange's policy if you request a handset unlock on PAYG is 3 months, Orange on contract only have to release the unlock when the contract period 12/18/24 is completed. If I helped or saved you money - Thank me
If I helped you spend some money - spank me
If I done both - :lipsrseal me:eek:

Thank you so after 3 months of the handset being registerd in my name, i can then unlock it even though the previous owner who was on contract,?failed to complete the contract, as they ran into errores,?.0

I'd just add, if the phone was obtained fraudulently then when Orange find out they will blacklist it.
I get 1 or 2 calls a week from people who've bought iPhone's (either on the bay or through small adds) and fond that the phone is either blacklisted or becomes blacklisted.
Orange will not lift the barring on these phones.0 -
can you please be more specific, what you mean obtained fraudulantly, do you mean a phone that is sold, and then claimed on insurance?I'd just add, if the phone was obtained fraudulently then when Orange find out they will blacklist it.

A phone that's been obtained by using someone else's ID either by fraudulently upgrading or simply starting a new contract in their name.
The fraudsters can then sell the handset on, take the money and run.
Although a phone that was reported lost/stolen and then claimed on insurance also wouldn't be unbarred by any network, as the phone would then be the property of the insurance company.0 -
ok like i said before, the chap, who sold me the phone, did tell me he had the phone on contract, for only a few months, before, he realised he would not be able to pay for it for what ever reason, which resulted in him, defaulting on his payments, and needing to sell the phone, so as the phone was not stolen, i bought it, and registerd it with orange, so i dont think he is a fraudster, because, he had good feedback, am sure he,s just a normal chap, who has hit, stormy times.0

The monthly price on a contract phone has part of the original price of the handset incorporated into it. That's why a sim only contract is cheaper. If the original owner has defaulted on his contract, then orange haven't recouped the cost of the handset and while they may not have legal claim over it I can't imagine they will unlock it ever, infact,I'd be very suprised if they don't block it. Sorry but my opinion is you've bought yourself an expensive iPod0

I don't think you are correct here cause the number of phones I have bought from friends I know who clearly tell me that its from a contract they took out but they could no longer pay for. it, is very high and I know for a fact there are people who take out contracts with no intention what so ever of paying but just to get a free handset so I totally disagree with you on that one.0 -
Orange will not bar it in those circumstances but being payg you will wait 3 months.
I use my Orange contract/sim with the 3GS iphone bought abroad (on payg & got it unlocked free) all good, except at home I have to swap to a UMA mobile to get a network signal but orangeworld over wifi is so fast at 5-7MBPS
