Cars with cheap tax and insurance

Yea I don't think I'm going to be able to afford to buy a brand new car, despite all the pros that come with them.
I only want to spend about £1000 max on a car and as little as possible on the insurance but as I'm 21 that's likely to not be that cheap!
You'll get a decent 106 for that. Go for a basic model, but with power steering. Not bad to insure, either the 1.1 petrol, or 1.5 diesel.
They stopped making them in 2003, so a 2001 or earlier phase 2 would be good.
Don't know if the VED bands for the post 2001 are dearer or not though.
edit
the diesel is slightly cheaper for a newer one, band E, so £110 as opposed to £125, the 1.1 is band F, so the same at the moment.0 -
What about a skoda fabia? So naff, its cool and low insurance/maintenance costs.0
