If you haven't paid enough NI in the previous tax years, you can get reduced JSA after £6k and nothing after £16k. (if partner earns less than what the law says you need to live on)
I thought OP said her partner had been paying full NI? I know you dont get contributions based if you have more than £16k savings as I was almost in that situation.:smileyhea0 -

You DO get contributions based JSA if you have more than £16,000 in savings if you have paid the required NI.0 -

They told me when I signed on that if I had more than £16k I wouldnt be entitled to anything and would have to use up any savings to bring me below the £16k threshold before I would be paid anything (after a resubmission application). I have paid NI for 20 years and I was told that more than once when I first phoned to sign on and when I had my first face to face meeting with them. Im only posting based on info I got from Job Centre. Wouldnt surprise me if they gave me incorrect information TBH.:smileyhea0 -

What you have described is Income based JSA.
If they told you the above in relation to Contribution based JSA they were wrong.0 -

Contributuons based JSA is non means tested. You could have a million in the bank but as long as you've got enough contributions registered for the relevent tax years you would still be entitled to receive payment for the six months. The people in the jobcentre wouldn't know if he was entitled to it or not. They sort out the ID and finalise the forms ready to be sent to processing. Normally if you earn around £5000 or above in a tax year you would have full contributions for that tax year. If he has been working in the relevent tax years (currently 07/08 & 08/09) as an employee and earning enough then there should be no reason as to why he can't receive it.

If his NI contributions didn't get recorded and you are working fulltime then maybe that is why.
You need to get an explanation! My hubby was made VR and also recd 6 months PILON and still received Conts based JSA. They no longer take PILON into consideration ( since Oct 08 I think), so there is no reason why your DH should not be entitled. I would get him to chase up - the job centre are not very forthcoming about info, neither do they all give out the same info!
PILON and Holiday Pay are no longer taken as income and are instead treated as capital. Same with redundancy payments.Be careful about the £3,000 redundancy as they take that into consideration as well. If I was you I'd shove it in a mattress, so they don't know about it.
ANY and ALL income is taken into consideration as well; as the information is different not only between job centres but their staff as well.
This has been the case for years now.0 -
Thanks for all these interesting replies. Hubby is going back to the Job Centre this morning to sign on; apparently, when he went last week it was an intial interview. They took his bank details last time, so I'm hoping perhaps it was just a misunderstanding - maybe the advisor thought he was asking if he would be receiving a payment immediately?
He tells me that if he is entitled to JSA he will get it; if not, he won't. He's not prepared to take it any further than that, and I can't do anything on his behalf, so it's out of my hands.
He has paid full NI contributions for all of his working life, to the best of my knowledge.0
