Jobseekers Allowance

My husband has just had his initial interview with the Job Centre following redundancy. He filled in a form, and had an interview with an advisor. No mention was made of Jobseekers Allowance. When he asked if he would receive any payment he was told no, but his National Insurance stamp would continue to be paid.

He would certainly qualify for NI based Allowance, as he was employed for many years. He did receive a £3,000 redundancy payment; however, would this make him ineligible?

Didn't he ask why he wouldn't receive any monetary payments? Surely he would get contributions based JSA for six months, even if he isn't entitled to income based JSA? The only thing I can think of is if the redundancy was voluntary, could the JC have given him a sanction?

It wasn't voluntary redundancy; he was laid off. I think he needs to query this straightaway. Everything I've seen says that NI based JSA should be paid automatically and is not means tested.

After all, isn't that why he's been paying NI all these years??

Did he receive Payment in lieu of notice?? JSA isn't paid for a period of notice.

If his NI contributions didn't get recorded and you are working fulltime then maybe that is why.

You need to get an explanation!

My hubby was made VR and also recd 6 months PILON and still received Conts based JSA. They no longer take PILON into consideration ( since Oct 08 I think), so there is no reason why your DH should not be entitled. I would get him to chase up - the job centre are not very forthcoming about info, neither do they all give out the same info!

Be careful about the £3,000 redundancy as they take that into consideration as well. If I was you I'd shove it in a mattress, so they don't know about it.
ANY and ALL income is taken into consideration as well; as the information is different not only between job centres but their staff as well.

Only counts if claiming income based and is over £6k.

Will he be receiving an Occupational Pension?

Did he pay full Class 1 NI for the 07/08 and 08/09 tax years?

Has he been consistently employed for the last few years without a break? I wasn't entitled to JSA(C) last time I was out of work because I was one month short of 2 full years of NI contributions.

I got £6k redundancy and had about £9k savings already and still received JSA. Not sure if it perhaps depends on how much you are earning as they do take your partners income into account. Hope you get it sorted.

If you haven't paid enough NI in the previous tax years, you can get reduced JSA after £6k and nothing after £16k. (if partner earns less than what the law says you need to live on)
