Where can I get this book? We are flying in to Prestwick and then have to get train up. However on way home we are flying direct Aberdeen to Dublin
Choco have you been to Aberdeen yet? I have a SPREE book sitting doing nothing in my house and would be happy to let you have it. I know no personal info can change hands on here but if you haven't had your stay I could leave it at Reception at the Royal for you. Apologies if I've missed the boat!Marg0 -
Margaret many thanks for offering to come with Aberdeen Spree booklet. Yes we have been to Aberdeen and certainly wont go back to Royal Hotel. Lets just say if we could have gotten anywhere else to stay we would have moved.
As we travel to Aberdeen on a regular basis can anyone recommend a good B & B or Hotel for future use.0 -

Sorry I can't suggest anywhere else as I stay there but I have to agree that The Royal Hotel is a place I've longsince vowed never to go back into.
Its location is great if you like being on one of the most fight-friendly and staggering drunk-filled couple of streets in the city.
Folk who stay there must get a really bad impression of the place, unless they want really crap nightclubs, fast food and strip joints.0 -
What about the Holiday Inn Express? There is a thread on how to get it cheaper.travelover0

The one on Chapel St? I reckon that might be ok.
True the Union St end of Chapel St is a bit lively at weekends due to the number of takeaways but the hotel itself is further up the street where things are usually a good but quieter. There is a nightclub, lap-dancing place, snooker club, casino ringing the block opposite and up but they never seem to have as much disturbance/hassle as places in other parts of the city. Several good places to eat nearby, if you like a curry, Nawab's on Summer St (next st up) is one of the best and most reasonably priced in the city centre and there are several good places of various types on the blocks in each direction. I often get a sandwich on the way to work from the baker right opposite. Avoid their pies but everything else is fine.
Parking is ok, there is a council multi story car park almost next door and plenty of on-street, free after 6pm till 8am (utill August anyway).0 -
My inlaws stayed in a B&B on Holburn Street near to the Asda at Garthdee. It is a bit further from the city centre however the buses 1 & 2 go into town very regularly from there i.e. every 5-10 minutes.
what uni is your son at as I think Aberdeen Uni used to have accomodation for family coming to visit that wasn't in the Student halls but was near it? If he's at RGU could always contact the uni to ask? As for cheap in Aberdeen....good luck! i remember one night the roof in my boyfriends flat caved in....don't ask! Anyway we had to find somewhere else at 11pm at short notice. Finally booked into the Travellodge on Bridge Street (I think) and it was soooo dear! Oil....
Hope that helps slightly. What's fur ye won't go by ye!0 -
What a shame the Royal was so dire - I would say avoid the Travelodge on the corner of Bridge St and Union St as well - pretty basic and very popular with adolescents for staying in after a night out on the town at the weekend in place of a taxi home because they often have cheap deals at the weekends! (Also they can book a couple of rooms then pile in with their sleeping bags because no-one seems to be too efficient in checking!).
When my brother comes to stay he very often books in at the Holiday Inn Express but the one at the Exhibition Centre - he can get a good deal at laterooms.com usually. Obviously more awkward without a car but you may be able to take advantage of the park and ride scheme which operates from there - might be worth checking out?
Hope your next visit is much better!Marg0 -
Thanks for all your replies. We have stayed in Travelodge before. Yes its basis but at least its spotless clean. We have also stayed at Treetops Hilton via last minute.com . It again wasn't the best the room was sooooooooo small and they told me it was a luxury room. It was expensive and not worth what I pd. I purchased a ticket for internet usage and during the night got a nasty letter to report to reception as I hadn't pd for it. Wasn't amused especially when I got another.
I have also stayed at Holiday Inn Express it wasn't bad but they only provide a continental breakfast.
I will soon have been round all hotels in Aberdeen. Two sons are both at Aberdeen University and will be until 2013 when they both will hopeful graduate. If I could only find a good hotel at a reasonable price I would stay there every time.
After our experiences so far I reckon the car may be best place to sleep next time or else now that 1 son has a garden may pitch a tent!0 -
Have you checked out Premier Inn, you can get a good rate if you book early, I have just started a new job and we have to use them where possible, I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the rooms and the restaurants etc... In my previous job I did Aberdeen regularly, I have always found it expensive to be honest, there are some lovely hotels but not in the city centre, I stayed here last time it was OK, didn't eat there as we took a customer out for dinner.0
