How to unlock my phone from its network?

A MotorolaQ cellphone came my way recently, but its from a different provider that the one Im hooked to. Its there any way to use unlock it so I can use it? I hear some time ago something about unblocking a phone from it service provider? Any info, anyone?

A phone shop should be able to do for between 10 to 20 quid.
Or you could get a payg sim from the network it was on and see how much they'd charge, then topup that much.0
