Shellsuit - I think you'll find the joke is on you for not reading the question properly. Same goes for Mini Cooper.
Where does it say the make up bag was left in a carrier bag?
'I'd wrapped it in plastic bags' is what was said.
As to whether the bag was likely to have been genuinely binned, for me it would depend on where it was left/what it was wrapped in. However I disagree that the items would not be attractive. I've worked in countries where even your basic cosmetics are expensive for local people and big name items are simply off the scale. Such things can have a high 'covet value'. It's not all about re-sale!
That said, I think you'd have to give the girl the benefit of the doubt.
I think the hotel has responsibility here. If they care about their custom at all, they should make some sort of recompense.

Personally, if you are willing to spend £200 worth of toiletries for travel then you can afford to lose it. It's up to you if you want to dock her wages. I wouldn't spend so much on toiletries which i'd use and dump during holiday so i wouldn't chase it up. If it was £200 in cash missing then i'd expect that back.

I always keep everything in my suitcase and lock it whenever i go on holiday. It's a hassle to go through when getting stuff, but I don't have to worry about maids with itchy hands. I've heard of friends getting shirts and stuff nicked during hotel stays so i rather err on the side of caution.
  • If you have contents insurance and you have an all risks section, you could claim under this section for loss

What on earth are you talking about ~ the joke's on me??

I'd wrapped it in plastic bags it said and a plastic bag/s to me is a carrier bag/s, so what is your point?

Depends on how believable I think it is that a) the cleaner's wages would really be docked and b) it was a genuine & reasonable mistake to make.

It would not remotely surprise me if either was false, but neither would both being true. People make mistakes - and that might have been me being messy + I do have a habit of transporting toiletries in a plastic bag.

(OP is probably staying in an independent hotel? - I'm guessing, otherwise you could have recourse to the chain's head office and ask them not to dock the girl's pay, but reimburse you through THEIR insurance for the stuff.)

If you take £200-worth of toiletries on holiday to a poorer country and leave them lying about in the room then, sorry, but that stuff happens. Would you also leave a £200 watch or bracelet unattended in the room?

The OP can afford overseas holidays and is able to have £200-worth of toiletries in addition to her other luggage. The cleaner - who may or may not have deliberately lifted the goods - is a young woman in a VERY male-dominated society (my boyfriend is Turkish; from Istanbul, coincidentally, and he has complained to me many times that he strongly dislikes the way women are subjugated by some sections of Turkish society) and who has to clean up tourists' rooms all day in order to make a living.

Personally, I wouldn't want the girl to pay for my extravagant toilette, regardless of whether or not she deliberately removed the goods (doubtful, as she'd probably know her pay would be docked if anything went missing).

    Hmmm....take the hit !

The toiletries could have been lost elsewhere in transit / destroyed / leaked anyway....dont ever take what your not prepared to lose when travelling basically. The cleaner was just tidying up what you just left about in fairness -

    confused...? simples!
Beware Lego Men with Deep pockets...!
  • This is the usual sinario the hotel manager presents to the CUSTOMER, it saves them having to MANAGE their staff. If you allow it to go unchallenged this time it will happen again. After all why wouldn't it. Is it not better to force the hand of this manager to deal with the situation and hopefully work towards a future where customers have confidence in the hotel staff?

My two friends had all the presents they were bringing home for the families taken from there cases while in the hotel room on the day they were leaving. The hotel manager said it was the airport staff......?

    Always think of the future
  • It works both ways. £200 worth is an awful lot and I would think twice about taking that amount on holiday with me; however, you are entitled to take whatever you wish and trust that it will be safe in the hotel. Was it in the bin? Certainly not! Why trash it then. Earlier threads have a good point, it may be a scam and it should be up to the hotel to use a bit of integrity and decide what to do without using pity tactics like "we will dock her pay". They must deal with it - sensibly.

Really, so if you had £200 worth of belongings stolen (from anywhere) you would be happy for the thief to get away with it, if it was a luxury item others considered extravagant?:D
