Octagon Car Insurance - new co.??

  • I'm not the only one then. My policy was cancelled by Octagon as they have not received proof of my NCB which was posted using the business envelope provided.

The GoCompare site directed me to Octagon:

1st they got the Direct Debit date wrong
2nd they then cancelled the policy saying no NCB received.

Spoke with them today and expected a resolution but they were not interested. The policy is cancelled and they want their cancellation fee.

They call themselves Octagon - but the reality is they only have one side and that side is not good.

Conclusion: Going to be hassle to recover costs from Octagon and I'm surprised GoCompare deal with them. Maybe it would be wise not to select the cheapest insurance broker in future - you live and learn!
  • Had a small bump last week but octagon chose to write the car off, went out and bought another one, same make, same model, same engine etc etc, called octagon to change details over and they told me they couldnt insure me because of my age (i'm 32) despite the fact they had covered me on the same one for over a year. I then asked if I could have the remainder of my premium refunded (only just paid it) as will have to go elsewhere but was told no, if you cancel a policy after a claim you get nothing back - even if they force you to cancel in the first place by making up some !!!! and bull story about your age!

just told the FSA but didnt get me very far.

They might look cheap but I promise they'll cost you more in the long term!!!
  • DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY ! ! !

I, like a lot of othe rpeople i am now aware of, had problems with the proof of NCB, and in Jan this year (after the now very common threats of cancellation) i e-mailed a copy of the proof to Octagon and that seemed to be that.

Tonight i was stopped by our local police as i apparently have no Insurance - so i gave thme Octagons details, they carried out a check and informed me that Octagon had told the police that my policy was cancelled by them back in December LAST YEAR. 2 major points FIRSTLY when i spoke to them in January this year it was sorted (not what they told the police tho) and SECONDLY i am now facing 6 points on my licence with a £200 fine AND have to pay storage and recovery costs for my van to get it back and i cant find any evidence of a refund from the cancelled policy.

    DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY
  • Oh no. Just signed up with these jokers and they haven't even got enough staff to answer the phone in the Sales Dept because I want to upgrade the policy so god knows what they will be like if I want to make a claim.

I take it I'm better off taking the hit of a cancellation fee rather than persevering? Very worrying they haven't got enough staff to cope with basic enquiries.
  • I find it hilarious that all the people who complain are the idiots that manage to get their insurance cancelled!

Everyone knows how insurance works these day! Buy a policy and send in your NCB immediately, post it or email it as your last insurer would have sent it out on your renewal.

Who doesn't check their monthly direct debits to make sure your insurance is paid!?

Why if your card has declined would you try again and again before checking that it's not been put into a holding account? Banks then take their time requesting the funds back as its no skin off their nose when you get your money back.

After purchasing insurance over the years (and not being an idiot) always request the name of the person you speak to, ask them to post AND email your docs, check them immediately. Confirm what you have to do to ensure your policy stays active!

I've been with octagon since 2010, always had great customer service their staff are friendly and go above and beyond . People annoy me when they make threats that they cannot possibly follow up as they themselves have not done what they should have. Working in the financial services myself I see people making wild threats that will be laughed off by the appropriate bodies as the customers are the ones to blame!

If octagon are so awful why would they have over 1,000,000 customers? I've recommended to family and friends and will continue to be their customer

    My dealings with Octagon Insurance.

I took out insurance with Octagon a few weeks ago and contacted Swiftcover and asked them to post my NCB. I have an option to upload the document to Octagons website. Swiftcover took forever to send the document and Octagon cancelled after warnings. This was despite me keeping in contact with them and letting them know it was not in my control. Swiftcover promised to send the proof but it took weeks.

Anyway, they cancelled and I had to insure again. I again used them as other companies were around £150 more expensive. Swiftcover still didn't send documentation.

10 days after insuring for the second time with Octagon 13.07.12 I receive a text saying insurance will be cancelled on the 23.07.12 due to no NCB being received.

Then today, 14.07.12, one day later, I receive a letter saying insurance will be cancelled due to no NCB being received. You have been given 10 days grace period to find a new policy. So this implies cancellation no matter what.

So, I email customer services quoting some Money Saving threads.

Customer services this time were great.

    I dealt with:
    Racheal Kayser - Customer Services
    One Quote Direct Insurance Services
For and on behalf of Octagon Insurance Company Limited
    Tel: 0844 561 4615
    Fax: 0844 561 4617

Racheal dealt with me and we exchanged 4 emails within a space of 15 minutes. She called my previous insurer and confirmed my NCB proof.

    All sorted.

I took out a policy to start next month when my current one expires..
They took payment straight away no confirmation details, nothing...

Phoned them first thing on the Monday and was told I hadn't given them my email addy, so how did I get a quote then ???
Told them I wanted to be refunded and stay with current insurer [I'd read this thread]..

Customer services state 10 days to be refunded..We'll see, otherwise I'll ask the bank to dispute payment...

If they can't handle a simple confirmation e-mail, how would they handle a claim...

I'm not risking it....no thanks octagon
I always take the moral high ground, it's lovely up here...

Octagon seem to be a scam organisation.
The main purpose is to lose documentation or claim to not have received no claims bonus documents and cancel insurance without warning.
This way they keep the first initial deposit which can make up almost a quarter of the years insurance in some cases (plus a £50 cancellation fee even though the customer is not cancelling, they are!)

I have had dealings with them and they have done this time and time again. No insurance = no risk and they get to keep the initial deposits without worrying about payouts as they cancel the insurance as they see fit.

Scam - go straight to the ombudsman.

I have just had my policy canceled by octagon, we bought a policy in July 2012 paying a deposit of 166.00 the whole years insurance was 637.00 i thought at the time the deposit was a large on but we needed the van insured so paid it, after 21 days they tried to take the next payment at the same time as threatening to cancel the insurance wanting proof of no claims, we sorted that problem out only to be then sent a letter saying the wanted 138.00 as the direct debit payment the attempted to collect had failed they then said they wanted twenty percent of the policy. we rang them and tried to sort it out but we didnt have the money to pay it so said we would ring back on the 30th august when we had money in the bank to pay it. they canceled our policy leaving us with no insurance. even before we had agreed to ring back and pay the 138.00 nothing had been put on hold they just canceled the policy. we rang on the 31st august to try and pay the 138.00 even though we didnt think it fair we should have to pay all that money to be told the policy was canceled but if we paid the remaining amount on the policy of 35.00 the sales team would ring back and set up another policy and would take into account the 166.00 and the further 35.00 we had paid for the month we had the policy for. when the sales team did ring back they wanted another 166.00 deposit to set up a new policy which we dont have and we have now been left with no insurance no money to pay another large deposit and octagon have said that we have had the money the have taken after the cancelation fees we are basically straight. i told them i was making a formal complaint about it and would not have paid them a penny more than the 166.00 deposit if i would have known i was being tricked into thinking they would be fair with us. we are now in a position where we dont know what to do next, very discusted with octagon and compare the market as we got the policy through the compare the market website and think they should be removed, anyone any ideas what we can do?
