Where to donate Mobility Scooter (used)

Hi There,

My mother moved to a nursing home over a year ago and sadly no longer can use her Mobility Scooter.

Due to her deteriorating condition I am her legal Deputy and have to make a decision about what to do with the scooter. At the moment it is taking up valuable space in my shed and could be serving someone else for a good few years instead.

I have given it some thought and these are my options as far as I can tell (I need to check with COP about donating as mum is very much alive - just not able to make decisions about finances, belongings etc);

A: I could sell it and put the money in her bank account
However, she does not need the money and selling something like this seems a bit of hassle. I don't know how much it is worth etc either.

B: I could freecycle it
However, I don't particularly trust that it will go to someone who actually needs it. I'd want to vet the person to make sure it is not sold on!!

C: I could donate it to a charity
This is my preferred route, but there seems to be a lack of real options! This is the best I could find: Search for Brighter future workshop on google.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks.

try the Royal British Legion mate......
  • There are lots of disability charities or community groups for older people you could contact a local group to see if they know of someone who would benefit from it at least that way you will know what has happened to it.
Its not huge hassle to sell, ebay or local ads usually would go quick.

Ive seen a few scooters go through the local auction house for around the £100 mark. I would go for the sell and donate the money to your mums favourite or most appropriate charity or you could even advertise in your local paper.

Why not give the place where she bought it a call and see how much it would be worth secondhand and if they have any better suggestions for the sale of it?

Not 100% sure where it was purchased.

Selling and donating to her favourite charity sounds good. Donating to a charity or community group sounds ideal - just don't know of any! We are near Neath in Wales - If anyone knows of any charities this way do let me know.

    Thank you for the suggestions.

Hi you could contact a local church, they may know of a charity. I would also suggest trying the local Royal British Legion. Good luck and well done for thinking of other people. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Rather than this go to an older person who may have to pass it on again in a couple of years, I wondered if it would be possible to donate it to a serviceman injured in Afghanistan and currently being rehabilitated - could you contact Selly Oak Hospital

You could also donate it to ShopMobility, which is where my scooter will be going in a couple of years when I replace it.

ShopMobility don't just help one person with their scooters; they help LOADS. Not only will they look after the scooter and make sure it is regularly serviced and maintained, but they will let disabled people use it to get themselves out and about. You can find the nearest location to you on their website (clicky).

How great would it be to see someone on your mum's old scooter and know that they are out and about through the kindness of your donation!!

If it were me I'd phone or pop into the local age concern office and ask for ideas of charitys that would appreciate it or else I'd look for a hospice/charity shop that sells large items.

Another vote here for shopmobility. They are a charity, and often desperate for the money to buy more scooters for the service, which benefits loads of people (including me). I'm sure they would be pleased to receive it (assuming it's in good nick). Take a look here to find your local scheme, and give them a ring.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)
