I started learning again last year and have had about 40 lessons or so, which makes me feel like a total failure.

Don't let it worry you, I passed on my 7th attempt, you've got a long way to go to beat that!
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)

An aggressive instructor is not only a bad teacher but also a dangerous one, as learners become anxious when instructed my someone who shouts or loses their temper. We learn less not more under these conditions and can't think straight.

Change instructors immediately and have a trial lesson before commiting to a new one. You will find someone who gives you confidence.
