problem with BT phone-line via Sky

Hi wonder if you can help. our telephone spends about half the time out of order and on one of our TVs we get a message saying something abut a problem with the phone line connection. You can dial a number on the phone but it then goes dead - when you try ringing it from outside it goes straight to answerphone - but we can't access that of course. it's not the phone (as Sky at first insisted) as we've tried it with another phone. Sky have eventually agreed to send out an engineer but this will cost us think £90 plus another £60 if the problem isn't a Sky or BT one! We're sure it is a problem but is there any other checks we can carry out ourselves and any tips of how to avoid this ridiculous call-out charge. many thanks

Ok,
Unplug all the phones & extensions from the NTE5 Master Socket (see photo)
As in the photo, unscrew the bottom faceplate & plug a normal phone (not a wireless one) into the test port indicated by the red arrow. Now try it,is the fault still there?
If so it is on BT's side & therefore not your responsibility.
If it is not, then it's your extensions.if you have extensions wired into the bottom plate, plug those back in & then a phone only into the phone jack.same again,is the fault still there? If it is,then it is those extensions.
If not, plug the Sky extension into the test socket & see if the fault is there or not.
Also check your microfilters.does each phone point in use have a filter?0 -
many thanks spike I'll try that when i get home from work tonight. i know that my OH has been removing and replugging in various bits while on his mobile to sky trying to sort it but i haven't seen him with a screwdriver yet so we'll have a go thanks again.0

guess what the phone has started working again. this is what has happened several times before and no doubt it will stop working again next week. will try your tip. the BT engineer left a card saying he'd called at 9.20 am this morning - which would have been fine if we'd actually known he was coming today and we would have taken some leave to make sure we were here!0
