Hi,
I need to know if it's possible (and how to do it) to stop kids from going online while I'm not there.
Can I block it/password protect the connection? At the moment, it connects when pc turns on. I don't want to make it so awkward that I can't connect it easily when I want to use it.
It seems like such a simple thing to do, but I can't work out how to do it.
Can anyone help?

Have a look at K9 Internet Protection. Would post a link, but not allowed to as a new user!
It's free, and does an excellent job of keeping the kids safe. You can configure what times the internet is actually permitted, and it gives various other parental controls. It's all easily over-ridden with a password if necessary.0 -
Another method would be to put a password on your account - which only you know the password to. Although that would prevent your children using the computer when you're not there.0

unplug/disconnect the router and pit it/the cable somewhere locked away?0
-
If your PC is hard-wired to the router; take the cable away.
If you connect to the router wirelessly; take the aerial out of the router, take the mains cable/adaptor away
Or, to prevent PC use altogether
Take the keyboard and/or mouse away with you.
Remove the monitor cable.0 -
What operating system are you on?
Windows Vista and Windows 7 have parental controls built in which allow you to restrict internet access to certain times of day for each account. It also allows you to restrict the category of websites which can be viewed. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Set up the browser home page for your router and set the router not to auto go online so a password is needed to connect.Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.0

I found a really really good one.
I logged into the router, and blocked the letter 'w'.
So basically anything that loaded with a 'w' in it was not allowed.
Bearing in mind that everything starts with www. , it was a good idea.0 -

Simply leaving out the www would get round this very easily0 -
So how does that work with Favourites, cached pages etc? And forums such as https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2494781 or links?
Use the router to block access other than at certain times. Set up user accounts and only allow your own with Admin privileges. Set up 2 accounts, one with internet access (password enabled) and one without.0
