package not arrived

on 11/08/06 i sent an item (an a4 sized jiffy envelope) to scotland.

have been contacted by the buyer stating not received yet and querying if sent.

have replied with the details off the C.O.P. and said to check with sorting office and neighbours if left there. also said will send a copy of the C.O.P. to the buyer if needed.

ive contacted another buyer who i sent to the same day who hasnt yet left feedback (nt that i expect it) to see if their package was received. the other four received theirs as they all left feedback.

as i have a mind like a sieve (sure ive asked this before) can i ask again

a. have i done things right so far?

b. how long do you give for a small package to arrive first class post?

c. if i send a copy the C.O.P. (or should i send the original?) then is the ball in the buyers court?

d. what happens if i have to refund? full including postage or just refund for the item?

thankyou!

OK, there is no point in sending the COP to the buyer, the contract exists between *you* and the RM. I would normally advise that a full refund, including post and packing is made in week 2, if you can stall it a bit longer then do so, but don't risk too much.

After you have refunded your buyer, and after 15 working days has elapsed you can make a claim for loss against the Royal mail.

The ball is in your court...it is up to you to refund the buyer and reclaim from the RM.

  • I am reasonably new to ebay and so far I havent had any of the parcels I have posted go missing. I copied this off of the post office website with regards to standard parcels:

    Standard Parcels

For Standard Parcels the ‘due date of delivery’ is the third working day after it was posted. 90% of parcels arrive within three working days, but if yours doesn’t, the information below will tell you how we can help.

Is it less than seven working days since your parcel should have arrived?
If so, hold tight, it’s probably on its way, but may have been held up by an incomplete address, no Postcode, or unusual circumstances.

Has your parcel arrived seven or more working days after it was posted?
If so, your mail is classed as ‘delayed’, and we’ll give you compensation of 12 First Class stamps. If you provide additional evidence of delay and your claim for compensation is accepted, you will be sent a cheque for £5, or for £10 if your item has suffered substantial delay (i.e. was delivered more than thirteen working days after the day of posting and you provide additional evidence or proof of delay.

What happens if your mail is lost?
If your mail gets lost, we’ll give you a minimum compensation of 12 First Class stamps. However, if there was something of value in your mail, we'll refund the actual loss, up to a maximum of £32 or up to the market value, whichever is the smaller amount. Please apply for this within 12 months.

Please note that we do not pay compensation without an original certificate of posting being produced.

When you send your standard parcel, you can choose to pay for extra compensation of up to £100, £250 or £500.

If you’d like to claim for late or lost Standard Parcels, you can do so
    here: http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump3?catId=400144&mediaId=15500181

I know that quite a few sellers say that they will provide a certificate of Posting so that the buyer can contact Royal Mail directly however, I also have friends who have dealt with this themselves seeking compensation from Royal Mail and refunding the buyer cost of item and postage. So I guess its down to the individual seller. Hope that this has been of some help to you.:D

It's your responsibility that the item gets there. Don't send the COP as you will need it to make the claim.

I would have expected it to arrive by now but I would ask the buyer if they will give a few more days to see if it arrives by the end of the week. I would then refund them or send a replacement if you have more than one item.

You will have to wait a bit longer to claim from the PO (15 working days - 3 weeks from the posting date) to make your claim. Unfortunately you can only claim back the value of the item and not the cost of postage but I would refund the total cost including postage that your buyer paid.

The Po doesnt refund your posting costs which is a pain esp if it was a heavy item. Also a a pain as you refund the buyer the postage as well!!

How many buyers do you think say thay havent received it just to get a free item??

Yes, I am a bitter seller. A Seller gets a cert of post to prove sent but no proof from buyer to say not received.

Sorry Soolin your comprehensive reply arrived as I was composing my short one!
  • I asked my post office for a C.O.P the other week and they gave me a receipt saying that was the certificate. Is this right as if you send more than one item they'll be on the same receipt? It's probably just me being stupid but a certificate of posting sounds like it's separate to the till receipt.

I did the same with my local PO and was told that the till receipt was all i needed to claim if my parcel was lost. I excepted his answer but am now a little concerned that this is incorrect. I wondered what would happen when you send a few things and they are all on the same receipt, he now gives individual receipts for each item but still concerned this may not prove any use without a COP, he pulls his face when you ask especially if your posting more than 1 item at a time
Nobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission ;)

My post office supplies me with a pad of COP's that I write out myself and they tick off all my parcels and then stamp the receipts.

The pads with sheets that gets stamped are the "old" way.
There are now new tills which print receipts that can be used for proof of posting although you need to make sure you ask for the correct receipt as I think it's an extra one to just the receipt for the cash i.e. has postcodes on it.
I guess some post offices haven't got the new tills yet so are still using the "old" pads.
Just make sure you ask and it'll be fine.
