That said, make sure you send it to the DWP by recorded delivery. I sent in a claim for my wife when she was dying and it was 'accidentally' lost (those targets again. No doubt they hoped that she would be dead before they had to pay out). Let's just say that they paid up very quickly after I ... er ... told the manager his fortune.
On an even sourer note. Be wary of MacMillan. I have had the misfortune to have two goes with this organisation (and a friend, another), and each experience was very bad. The nurses were a disgrace and the organisation itself seemed to care for nothing except making money.
Would it be possible to be more negative?
for the OP:
You sound a lovely close family and I am sure you will give Mum and Dad all the support possible once you have got over the shock and come to terms with things yourselves.

I am sorry to hear of your news - I lost my Mum in very similar circumstances so I know just how you feel.
I would echo the advice of contacting Macmillian, the poster above seems to have had a poor experience, but I can honestly say that as a family we would have struggled to make it through the last 2 years of my Mums life without our wonderful Macmillan nurse by our side.
They/she helped with everything from sorting out the right forms to fill in, to giving us hugs when we needed them and cups of tea and tissues.
Our Macmiilan nurse was worth her weight in gold (a million times over) and I cannot praise her highly enough. I also offer the same praise to the hospice movement, again, their care was a million percent and made Mums last times far better than could have been expected.
Good luck and hugs
Puss
