Im sorry to hear of your Mums terrible news.
I just wanted to add something not many people think of in times of need
If she has been in a union or is employed by a large organisation there may be benevolent funds available for extraordinary spending .It may be worth speaking to her employer or workmates to find out what (if anything )is available. There are millions of pounds in these funds just waiting to be allocated.
All the best"I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something."0 -
Hi
I'm sorry to hear abaout your mum, on a practical level you need to ask your mum's GP for a DS1500 which will allow your mum to apply for DLA under the special rules.0 -
I would echo everyone else's comments, she can claim DLA under the special rules - as long as the doctor has given your mum a DS1500 she will automatically qualify for the highest rate care component, and if she qualifies, the mobility component.
She also may be able to claim ESA - again if she has a DS1500 she will automatically be put into the support group without having to attend a medical assessment.
I would also echo the comment made regarding blue badges, prescritiions and hospital parking fees.
Just one small point, if ( and I really do hope this is the case), if she does survive longer than six months, it will not impact on any of the benefits above - they will continue to be paid.
Also, does anyone care for your mum, such as your dad, as when she gets DLA, the carer may be able to claim Carer's Allowance.
Hope this helps

Because of her age, 60 in October she cannot claim her pension until August next year so I'm hoping that an earlier post saying she could claim pension earlier is correct. Might be better that way than claiming ESA atleast it's her own money than the governments.
unfortunetley the other poster is incorrect, the state pension cannot be claimed before she is classed as state pension age, so she would have to claim esa, if she has a works pension then they might have a different set of rules regarding this.0 -
Thanks guys for your help. So it looks like DLA will be the likely option. Silly really when there is money sitting there already allocated to her in the form of a pension. You'd think they'd just give her that as I'll guess it will be less than DLA.
I spoke to Dad last night about it and his reply was "Well we don't need to think about that yet". Bless him it's the stigma apart from child benefits we are a benefit free family.0 -
I see you have had some excellent advice already
Im going through pretty much the same with my husband who got DLA under "special rules"
I rely heavily on the McMillan Nurses- they have been brilliant
Take care

Your GP will issue a DS1500. This is an automatic fast track to all necessary benefits.
That said, make sure you send it to the DWP by recorded delivery. I sent in a claim for my wife when she was dying and it was 'accidentally' lost (those targets again. No doubt they hoped that she would be dead before they had to pay out). Let's just say that they paid up very quickly after I ... er ... told the manager his fortune.
On an even sourer note. Be wary of MacMillan. I have had the misfortune to have two goes with this organisation (and a friend, another), and each experience was very bad. The nurses were a disgrace and the organisation itself seemed to care for nothing except making money."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
