Over the weekend, we added 2 Indian runner ducklings to our pet family. They are very comical, cute and cheeky and have settled in really well.
Has anyone else got any pet ducks?
These are our 2 babies...Jemima and Justin (9 yo DD named them)

I dont have ducks but just wanted to say how lovely they are

Awwwwwww, bless. They're lovely. Make sure you shut them up at night in a secure place away from foxy loxy. Give them access to a small watering place, like half a childs sandpit. If you look on practical poultry on the forum there, there's a duck section on it. I've kept hens but not ducks, but from what I can gather they're pretty easy to keep.
I get paid to smell great :j0 -

I have 5 of the little critters....and they drive me up the wall!!! Always bullying each other, picking on the chickens, filling all the water bowls with mud...the list goes on...I have 2 Aylesburys, 2 Khaki Cambells and a Muscovy....(incidentally, if anyone knows of a Muscovy drake who needs a home...PM me...my little girl has gone very broody and lonely...)'' They are cute, but they would look a lot better like this.....
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.0 -

Yes they have a secure house for the night which is open all day and they have a large covered run attached for when we can't supervise them running round the garden. The garden is fully secure as we have 2 'free range' rabbits running round it all day (again get locked in their hutches at night)
We have a pond and several other places with water. The pondplants are no longer, they enjoyed those! They even joined our DD in her pool :rotfl:
I joined the forum, thank you!0 -
Do ducks make good pets? They are very cute

My brother had a pet duck, they hatched the egg and watched him grow. They're very entertaining if not a little annoying as they follow you everywhere! :eek:0

We personally feel they are easy to keep, we do have other pets (dog, cats, rabbits, and a horse at a nearby stables). As a child we had chickens, goats, donkeys, all sorts of birds, rabbits, guinea pigs etc)
We read up a considerable amount on ducks and we personally find they are easy to keep and look after. They don't cost a huge amount to feed/worm either.
Their bedding we buy from the yard where we have our horse so it is cheap.
They can get messy in the garden and obviously their housing needs good cleaning so if you are not frightened of a bit of cleaning and can get them from a young age, I would say they make good pets.
They are very cuddly and like someone said, they do follow you around. I wouldn't suggest it when you have small kids around as they are under your feet as such and could be stepped on quite easily.
I am sure someone more experienced will be able to advise better but for our circumstances and lifestyle, they are fab, otherwise we wouldn't have committed ourselves to them.0 -
A friend of mine has one - it was a rescue duck from a battery farm. Its quite tame now
