KLM & Delta codeshare - questions

Hoping someone with experience can help me!
Just booked a weekend in NYC via Expedia. KLM flight numbers but according to KLM website the flights are actually operated by Delta.
How does this code-share stuff work? Who is responsible for our booking, KLM or Delta? or both? Which airline do we check in with/bag drop with - does it matter? We don't wish to go to the wrong terminal either - seems like it is LHR terminal 4 for both, but on the way back from JFK we have been told Terminal 2 (which is Delta terminal).

I agree it is confusing.
It will be an indirect flight, where are you transitting?
You said seems like it is terminal 4 for both, but you have been told terminal 2 on the way back. Who told you terminal 2?0 -
If it is the LHR-JFK direct flight it is operated by Delta. You will check in with Delta and they will be responsible for your travel. The KLM involvment amounts to little more than selling tickets. You will depart from LHR Terminal 4 and return from JFK Terminal 2 into LHR T40

The flight departure times which I have booked are one of the (few) non stop flights Delta do to/from LHR.
JFK Terminal 2 has been quoted on my itinerary by Expedia.0 -
