Laptop turns itself off all the time!

Options
Right, I have a BIG problem with the laptop. I have been told its a processor problem. It sounds like the fan is working like mad and then it just turns itself off if I try do things like youtube. When the virus scan comes on, it works for about 2 mins and turns itself off too, so I dont think malware scans will complete.

Is this worth trying to fix or not. Luckily I am using another pc so I will just take the Ethernet cable out of this and put it in the laptop.

Sounds like it might be an overheating problem with the fan suddenly going mad and then the computer crashing. Download CoreTemp ( http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ ) and keep an eye on the temperatures....?

My laptop does the same. It is overheating. I've ordered a cooling pad to put underneath it.

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Thanks guys, I will open it up, check the fan and then get online from that and see what needs to be done

I couldnt get the back off, loads of screws and it wouldnt budge. So I have hoovered the fan outlet as it was a bit dusty. I have it sat on a glass table so I would've thought there would be enough air.

I have also too the performance stats from the task manager

    Total 500404
    Limit 4936168
    Peak 797840

I'm wondering if I should do the hijack thingy?

What you refer to as the outlet is actually where the air is drawn in. You really need to blow the muck out using an air duster e.g. here by blowing the air into vents on the side or top, where the warm air comes out.

You should always use it on a hard flat surface - not on a bed or sofa where it will soon get full of fluff etc.

make, model, age, ramsize, graphics card?

Could be hardware related, but rule out software first.

Regarding hjl, same principle as the other thread, you have too much running at startup. Switch spybot/AVG and ad-aware for avast, then follow the links in the other thread.

If you can't scan with malwarebytes, try safemode with networking, by holding down F8 at bootup, and attach an ethernet lead to the router to download/update.

Depending where the vent is, it can sometimes be better on your knee.

My guess- heating or bad ram

    try cleaning with compressed air

the manufacturers technical manual should help opening up

it is best to use compressed air - DO NOT use a hoover on the insides of it this is a very bad idea - static can damage the components

    or

if it has 2 pieces of ram try removing one and seeing how it runs on just one (will be slower but if it doesn't turn off the bit you took out will be the problem)

Have a look and see how hard the processor is working - do control/alt/delete and the click task list. Have a look and see if any of the programs are using a lot of CPU time. Sometime things in Windows get slightly broken and cause the processor to run at 100%, thereby getting hot and if the cooling system isn't 100% then it will overheat.
