So we went to see another house. It seemed nice. The area seemed nice but as we went up the gate you could hear loud thumping music from next door. Went in the house and bass from music is clearly audiable. It wasn't loud enough to shake the house but was loud enough to be irritable. As we left could clearly see two guys in their 20's cans of beer in hand dancing round the front room.
The house we are interested in is occupied by a friend of the seller who lives somewhere else. The friend is staying there temporary before going aboard so we know they aren't moving cause of the noise. The friend said they have been there a few months renting and never see them.
As its rented house I guess they won't stay forever but its just the thought of purposely buying a house when you know there could be problems next door. It was 7pm when we visited so unsure if its late night but I can just imagine them coming home drunk and sticking the music on loud or deciding to have a bit of a party in the back garden.
Its very different to have someone move next door that causes a nusiance rather than deciding to live next to someone who could cause a nusiance.
Apart from the music we really liked the house and location but know personally what a long drawn out and diffcult problem it is to deal with people who like loud music. So would you buy?

Guys with beer? Oh no!
Seriously though, I would take a lot more trips to scout the house, at various different times to find out if this was a one-off, or a regular occurrence.
You could even try ringing the doorbell and speaking to them - tell them you are looking at buying the house next door and wanted to know what they thought of the area. Try and suss them out that way.0 -
Personally, I wouldn't. If you do, you may regret it for a long time."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

No I don't think I would to be honest.

Problem is if you are buying a semi or terraced house (or a flat obviously) you run the risk at anytime of having neighbour noise through the wall. I would certainly as others have said try and go back at different times (especially in the evening/weekends) to see if its an issue but obviously don't tell the vendor why as they may tip off the neighbour! Even a walk by in the evenings to see if you can hear any noise from outside again may give you a good idea
If detached isn't an option then finding a house with a layout that maybe has hallways/garages adjoining rather than living rooms certainly can help0 -
The guys next door may be moving out next week? When you buy, unfortunately you have no way of knowing when the neighbours from hell may move in next door.
I would look for another house."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

When we moved into our new home the very first night while we were still opening boxes this music started.
I was terrified we had made a massive mistake and bought next to a nightmare neighbour! :A
Sinse that night.... I have heard *nothing* from them - complete neighbours from heaven. Thank god it was a one off!
So my advice - don't turn down a dream house on what may be a one off - investigate more - visit more often and then make an educated guess, don't jump to conclusions based on what have been a one off birthday celebration - which we can all forgive from time to time.0 -
Thanks for your replies. I have had a lot of problems living next door to people who like loud music. When I have complained its varied from completely ignoring me to a detailed explanation of how because he only played it in the extension which was built of a special kind of brick there was no chance I could hear it. I just don't think I would want to purposely move next to someone who liked loud music. If it had been some middle aged man then it might been okay but people in their 20's. Cans of beer. Rented property. It sounds like a cliche to be honest.0

No, no, no, a million times no. I lived next to a family of chavs who had music thumping whenever it suited them. Neither the council nor police did anything about it despite my repeated complaints.
Do yourself a favour and buy elsewhere. Life is too short. I would run a mile.0 -
There's a lot of alarmism on this thread. Yes, if there is a car on bricks on the lawn, a pitbull soiling the garden and broken windows then I would steer well-clear, but a couple of guys dancing around with beers is not in itself reason enough to reject a property.
The reason for this is pretty simple; it might be a very rare occurence. I don't always act my age whenever I meet up with my old schoolfriend (though my dancing is too terrible to inflict on the public!) but if we do have a few loud beers in the garden it must be twice a year maximum.
Go visit on a friday/saturday evening. Ask the other neighbours about them. If they look nice enough, ask them. If you are comfortable great, if you don't get any answers then that is the time to walk away.
Of course if the house isn't that great it might not be worth the effort.0
