hey there
I am confused and hope someone has some advice.
The flat I am currently renting doesn't have economy 7 but the electricity company put me on an economy 7 rate cause that's the meter I have (apparently, according to their records).
Recently there was a landlords electrical test and the guys who did it said we have both lines but are actually connected to the normal electricity.
I often work from home so do use electricity during the day and am not sure if I should switch. Also how would I work out an estimate for the comparison sites if the only bills I have are economy 7 ones and I decide to move from economy 7.
Thanks in advance for any help

You should only be on an Economy 7 tarrif if you have night storage heaters, or use more than 20% of your electricity at night ( 1-8 am ish).
If you are not then you will be paying more than necessary for your day units. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
When you change supplier you supplier will get details of the meter system at the property. If it indicates that you have E7, then they may put you on E7 by default. All you need to do is phone then up and say you want to be on a 24/7 tariff, they can then add the 2 readings together to determine your total consumption.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

What do you mean, you don't have E7 but the supplier is supplying on an E7 tariff? E7 is simply the tariff that the supplier supplies on. It requires a dual rate meter, else the supplier can't supply on that tariff.
Whilst I agree that some suppliers are prepared to supply a single rate tariff when you have a dual rate meter, this is not true of all ... and some suppliers will charge you to change the meter. As you are renting the flat, check with the LL that this will be ok before going ahead, else you could find you get charged again when the LL gets the meter reverted back!
With E7, there are no separate lines of electricity. It's the same stuff going through the same wires ... just with a timer that switches the register from one to another so allowing 2 different rates to be charged depending on time of consumption.
(Sometimes properties have separate circuit(s) within the property that is only live during the low rate period - ideal for storage heaters, etc - but during the off peak period all the circuits are live)
If you want to know which is cheaper for you, E7 or non-E7, you'll need to do a manual calculation based on the respective tariffs. Sometimes it's cheaper to be on E7 compared to the equivilent non-E7 tariff even if you don't use any cheap rate electricity (but you will use some!)
