OK, so actually its $97 from Walmart, and no, you can't buy it online... it's also contract based.

Maybe this answers the plethora of questions that are poping up at the moment with regards to iPhone 3gs prices going down when the new one comes out

Apple likes secretcy, so all we can go on is history.

Iphones are normally announced at WWDC that starts 7th June. Previously they tend to be out and on sale by the end of June / start of July so thats the timescale. I have no doubt apple have xx million of iPhone 4 sat in warehouses awaiting the 7th of June date. The exception was the original iPhone announced in January and on sale November. This long delay was supposedly as Apple had to get the various licences to make and use a phone and if they did it would be obvious they would be know to all and sundry so Apple announced that earlier than they had it ready to sell. They didn't need to do that for the 3G or the 3GS or 4G.

When the 3GS came out it got the premium price slot and the 3G dropped in price. When the 3G was announced then original dropped from the premium priced model to the "base" model price in price.
Apple generaly do not discount stock to sell it, when new versions appear they tend to recall all stock and I assume it goes to the refurb section on the web site or the warranty spares groups. They don't reduced things to clear the shelves.

You are very unlikely to get the 3G being sold off cheap, just like you never really see discounted iPods or mac books other than the official refurb store. (sometimes you do but not often)

It's likely the 4G will take the premium price point of the 3GS and the 3GS drop to the price point of the 3G and the 3G will be withdrawn rather than reduced to clear.
