Many things can affect ADSL in the house as well as ADSL Max. Long wires away from the socket can be one of them along with.........

Dodgy filter, poor wiring, poor quality phone/fax interfering, home alarm system interfering, old phone sockets.

This is why finding the cause of a speed problem is a process of elimination.

According to http://www.adslguide.org/qanda.asp?faq=radsl#Q51 only the upstream speed varies (for non ADSL Max). It is the downstream speed we were talking about.

I agree that it is a good idea to eliminate any in-house problems. I got a reduction in the number of disconnections when I replaced my USB modem on the end of a fairly long telephone lead with a proper router situated next to the phone socket and connected to my PC by ethernet. I don't think it affected my download speeds though.

I don't know why you linked to this. This link is for RADSL (Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line. People at home use ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line).

    The differences are...........

RADSL will adjust the upload speed according to the quality of the connection/line.

ADSL is a fixed upload speed. It is Asymmetric, this means that the flow of data is bigger in one direction than the other.

You mentioned that you've moved your modem and never noticed any speed difference. If you had no speed problems with the extended connection, moving right next to the socket will make no difference, you'll get the same speed. Extensions can make a difference in some cases.

  • Just above where I linked to it says

If you have ordered, or are using any product based upon BT Wholesale IPStream 500 (USB), IPStream S500 (Ethernet) or Home/Office 500 (wires only), you will be using RADSL automatically. The Home/Office 1000/2000 products use fixed line speeds.

I am on a 512k service with Pipex so presume I am using RADSL (fixed downstream speed, variable upstream). Adrain_London is on 2M so is using ADSL (ie fixed both ways). Is this right or have I misunderstood?

I can understand that poor house wiring can result in lots of disconnections and indeed found that improving my setup reduced my disconnections. I didn't think it would affect the (downstream) speed though. I thought you either connected at 512K, 1M or 2M or not at all. Have I misunderstood this?

    Thanks

You are using Pipex ADSL. This is giving you 512Kb download, and 256Kb upload. These speeds are fixed.

If you have a problem on your line, why do you think it will only affect traffic one way? It will affect both your download and upload speeds.

Now you say they can be affected by a line problem

    I'm still confused I'm afraid!

Here you say the speeds are fixed

The Maximum speeds are fixed i.e. your ISP caps your speed to say 512K but you could get a speed of anywhere from 100 - 500kbs and it would still be deemed to be acceptable.

Now you say they can be affected by a line problem

Obviously your actual achievable speeds will be affected by various factors such as line attenuation and line noise etc.

    I'm still confused I'm afraid!

This was meant as a rhetorical question, and not specific to your connection.

  • But I thought it was what we in the UK call Max ADSL that adapts the speed according to line conditions?

The site that Rex_Mundi liniked to seems to be an American site and I wonder if what they call plain ADSL is what we call Max ADSL?

Max ADSL is a new product out that not everyone has yet. Your ISP needs to upgrade your line to Max it is not done automatically.

A lot of people will still be on standard ADSL, there have been some teething issues with Max though.
